WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Previously, we reported that the U.S.-based animal rights group, PETA, urged people to stop using phrases that are offensive to animals — phrases like “Bring home the bacon,” “Be the guinea pig,” and “Kill two birds with one stone.”

Now, the group is urging the Philippine government to ban the Filipino delicacy lechon (roasted pig) on the grounds that it constitutes a violation of the right to dignity of animals.

A PETA spokesperson told The Adobo Chronicles  that pigs are not only victims of  extra-judicial killing (EJK), but are also subjected to humiliation during parties and events where lechon is served. “They are displayed and served  in the buff without any cover. Placing an apple in the mouth of the roasted pig doesn’t make the situation any better.”

Opposition Senators Risa Hontiveros, Franklin Drilon, Kiko Pangilinan, Antonio Trillanes and Bam Aquino seem to be receptive to the idea, and are considering filing the appropriate bill in the Senate.

So enjoy your lechon while you can, especially this holiday season!
