MANILA, Philippines(The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) popped the champagne as it was named the top university in the Philippines, besting the University of the Philippines, De La Salle University and Mapua Institute of Technology.
But “top” is relative especially when seen from a wider scheme of things.
Ateneo placed 84th in the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2023. That’s 83 notches lower than the top universities in Asia.
The University of the Philippines (UP), meanwhile, was in the 201-250 bracket, after placing 129th the year prior. Quite an embarrassing feat for the country’s state university, which boasts of a student population of “scholars” (Iskolar ng Bayan).
U.P. is the alma mater of ex-Vice President Leni Robredo, ex-Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon and other leading Opposition politicians. But we digress.
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The government of the Philippines is serious about improving the health status of Filipinos and preventing the onset or exacerbation of common diet-related illnesses such as diabetes, kidney disease and obesity.
A major strategy of the government is to impose new or increased taxes on sugary as well as salty foods on both stakeholders — manufacturers and consumers.
But in order to avoid being accused of discrimination, the Marcos administration is now also contemplating on taxing manufacturers and consumers of bland and spicy foods — to the disappointment of tokwa (tofu) makers and laing fans.
SAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – Enough with online debate. Forget the cage fight. It’s time to seriously crown the world’s Social Media King!
After back-and-forth exchanges defending their respective social media platforms, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg have agreed to once and for all prove who is better than the other.
The two men accepted a challenge proposed by netizens in which they will switch roles for one week to determine who can better manage a social media platform.
Musk will assume the role of CEO of Facebook, and Zuckerberg will become executive chair and chief technology officer of Twitter — for one week.
At the end of the 7-day challenge, the two men will hold a press event where they would list their respective accomplishments in their assumed roles. Netizens would then vote on who they think should be proclaimed social media king.
