Maria Ressa Faces A New Charge

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – One down, two to go. Or is it three?

Rappler CEO Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel in one of three cases she faces in court. The two other still-to-be-resolved cases are those for constitutional violation of the 100% rule on media ownership, and tax evasion.

But wait. Another case is soon to be filed against Ressa, this time for violation of quarantine regulations prohibiting mass gatherings.

Metro Manila is under General Community Quarantine (GCQ). By holding a press conference following her conviction last Monday, she violated GCQ rules on mass gatherings and maintaining social distancing as evidenced by photos from said presscon.

2020 is really turning out to be a bad year for the self-proclaimed journalist and crusader for press freedom.

But help is hopefully on the way. Rappler has set up crowd funding to help its CEO pay for her legal defense before a judicial system she  has labeled a “failure.”

ABS-CBN Refutes BIR Claim, Says 11,000 Employees Include Ghost Writers

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) –  ABS-CBN is refuting a letter sent to Solicitor General Jose Calida by the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR)  that  the broadcast network has only 4,401 employees.

ABS-CBN has consistently claimed that it has a total of 11,000 employees who will lose their jobs with the non-renewal of its franchise.

A spokesperson for the network told The Adobo Chronicles that while it is not denying the 4,401 number, he said that BIR Commissioner Caesar Dulay failed to include in his letter the remaining 6,599 ghost writers that it employs for its newscasts, teleseryes and other shows.

You see, even ghosts are entitled to get paid for work done.

ABS-CBN’s Karen Davila Not A Filipino Citizen!

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Quezon City Bureau) –For the longest time, news anchor Karen Davila has been fiercely defending  ABS-CBN and its boss, Gabby Lopez whose Filipino citizenship has been the subject of debate in the ongoing Congressional franchise hearings involving the broadcast network.

But alas, Ms. Davila herself is not a Filipino citizen, according to an investigation by The Adobo Chronicles.

Here’s what AC found out:

Luckily for Burmese Karen, Filipino citizenship is not required to be a broadcaster. Unless, of course, she owns ABS-CBN stocks.

That will be the subject of AC’s next investigation.
