MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In Senate Resolution No. 259, Antonio Trillanes wants the Senate committee on public information and mass media and other appropriate committees to probe the “proliferation of false, erroneous, distorted, fabricated and/or misleading news and information on social media, as well as the so-called social media trolls.”
The probe aims to protect the public from “manipulation” through the spread of “false, erroneous, distorted, fabricated and/or misleading news and information,” said the resolution.
It also seeks to hold “the authors, distributors and/or purveyors of the same responsible and/or accountable under the law for the contents they generate and/or disseminate.”
In a related move, Senator Manny Pacquiao filed Senate Resolution No. 259-B, asking for a Senate probe on the proliferation of biased news media in the Philippines.
On the receiving end of Pacquiao’s resolution are ABS-CBN, GMA News, the Inquirer and Rappler.
Pacquiao also wants to include individual trolls in the probe, including the social media accounts of Cynthia Patag, Jim Parades, Leah Navarro, and Raissa Robles.
Is this the beginning of the end for fake and biased news in the Philippines?
