Los Angeles, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – It’s game number three between the San Francisco Giants and the Kansas City Royals as they battle to win the 2014 World Series title.  The Giants and Royals are tied 1-1.

In solidarity with their home team, radio stations in San Francisco vowed to ban the Grammy Award-winning song ‘Royals’ from the airwaves for the duration of the World Series.

‘Royals’ won for singer Lorde and song writer Joel Little the Grammy for Song of the Year at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last January.

Today, Lorde and Little announced that they were filing a class-action law suit against the San Francisco radio stations for banning their song.

“Our song has nothing to do with the Kansas City baseball team, and neither are we into sports,” Lorde said, “so why are we being punished for something that we have nothing to do with?”

Little told reporters that they are suing for $10 Million which represents potential loss of revenue from the sales and exposure of their award-winning song. “How would Tony Bennett feel if radio stations in Kansas City started banning the song “I left My Heart in San Francisco?’ he asked.

MAJORITY OF AMERICANS LOOKING FORWARD TO WHAT WILL SOON BE 58 STATES OF THE UNION

635495041240943233-floridamapMiami, Florida (The Adobo Chronicles) – Since Hawaii became the 50th state of the United States of America on August 21, 1959, there have been a lot of statehood movements and speculation about which jurisdiction will become the 51st.

Today, more than half a century later, the U.S.A. is looking to welcome not only its 51st,  but its 52nd, 53rd, 54th, 55th, 56th, 57th and 58th state of the Union.

An unreleased Gallup poll shows that majority of Americans are in favor of adding up to 8 states to the Union as a way of boosting America’s overall economy. Many believe that the more U.S. citizens there are, the more taxes the government can collect, thus helping reduce the deficit while increasing the Gross National Product (GNP).  Americans are also confident that adding states to the Union will surely create new jobs. Think of all the additional bureaucratic offices that will have to be created by the new states, not to mention the legions of new elective posts.

article-2563649-1BAB833600000578-311_634x402Initially, there were only 7 jurisdictions being considered for statehood — the Philippines, Puerto Rico and 5 new states in California.  But this week, a new statehood candidate emerged: South Florida.

South Miami Vice Mayor Walter Harris proposed a resolution dividing Florida into two states, and it passed with a 3-2 vote at the city commission meeting on Oct. 7. He says Tallahassee, the state capital, isn’t doing enough to deal with the problem of global warming.

The proposal would chop off the bottom half of Florida — roughly from the city of Orlando down. The new state would include 24 counties.

Previously, there were multiple calls to chop off the entire state of Florida from the U.S. map because of problems it was causing the rest of the country, not the least of which was the problematic election count during the 2000 presidential elections.

This new proposal will chop off just half of the state but the chopped off part will still remain a part of the Union.

MANNY PACQUIAO IS AMONG TOP FIVE FILIPINO CONGRESSMEN

Manny ‘Pacman’ Pacquiao

Manila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – World boxing champion Manny Pacquiao was honored by his fellow lawmakers today for being among the top five Filipino Congressmen.  Pacquiao is an elected member of the House of Representatives, representing his native Saranggani province.

House Speaker Sonny Belmonte praised Pacquiao, who is also a playing coach of the Kia Sorrentos basketball team in the country’s Professional Basketball Association (local counterpart of the NBA in the U.S.), for being in the top 5 leading congressmen – absentee congressmen, that is. The boxer ranked No. 5.  Former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who remains in hospital arrest in connection with  plunder charges filed against her, is in the No. 1 spot.

Belmonte said that Pacquiao has attended 31 and missed 38 sessions in his current congressional term. “He is to be commended for his attendance record given his very busy schedule as a professional boxer and basketball playing coach. He truly brings great honor to our country,” Belmonte added.

Pacquiao is being investigated by the Philippines’ Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for tax evasion in connection with his earnings from his championship boxing fights in the U.S., to which he has said, “this is purely a witch hunt by BIR Commissional Kim Henares who seems to enjoy going after celebrities like me.”
