ANDERSON COOPER APPOINTED U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE PHILIPPINES

imageWashington, D.C. – President Barack Obama has nominated CNN’s Anderson Cooper to be the next U.S. ambassador to the Philippines.  The White House announcement on the nomination came on the heels of Cooper’s live reporting on the aftermath of super typhoon Haiyan which has devastated many cities and towns in Central Philippines.  He is the host of the popular CNN news program, AC 360. His reports from Tacloban, the worst-hit among the cities in the province of Leyte, gained both praise and criticism.

Many Filipinos, including expatriates from all over the world, have praised Cooper’s early coverage of the devastation in Tacloban and the Philippine government’s rescue and relief efforts which he described as lacking in coordination and clear strategy. On the other hand, Cooper earned the ire of Philippine President Noynoy Aquino who asked for “greater accuracy” in reporting on his government’s relief efforts and to focus on the strong spirit of the Filipino people in facing this calamity. Cooper responded on his news program that accuracy has been his hallmark as a journalist and that his reporting had always pointed to the enormous strength and fighting spirit of the Filipino people.

A Filipino news anchor, Korina Sanchez, speaking from her air-conditioned broadcast studio in Manila, also criticized Cooper for his reporting on the government’s less than stellar response to the needs of Haiyan survivors.  Sanchez said Cooper did not know what he was talking about.  Cooper then challenged Sanchez to do her own reporting at “ground zero” in Tacloban. Sanchez is the wife of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas who is supposed to lead government relief and rescue operations.

In nominating Cooper, Obama said that the CNN journalist is fully qualified for the job and brings with him extensive knowledge and experience with political, social and other issues plaguing foreign governments, including the Philippines.  Obama said that Cooper has also proven himself to be fearless, independent, and sensitive to the interest and needs of both the U.S. and its long-time ally the Philippines.

There seems to be bipartisan support in the Senate for Cooper’s nomination. That in itself is a rarity in America.

  1. I am a Filipina residing New Jersey. Thank you so much Mr Anderson Cooper. You deserve to be an Ambassador to the Philippines. The Philippine government are so corrupt. Who knows the money that they collected from other countries may be in the pocket of the government people. Help the victims build there houses especially the poor. Hollow blocks at bubong ok na. Kay Corina Sanchez wife of Roxas go to HELL lady koruna isa pa kayong corrupt akala mo makatao ka pero impactA ka naman Korina Sanchez.

“However, Coopers’ reported appointment as US Ambassador to the Philippines appears to be just a product by another satarical reporting by Adobe Chronicle.

Adobo Chronicle, which is also the same website that published a story about US protest to change Miss World Megan Young’s nationality from Filipino to American, created another viral news that certainly caught the interest of millions of active internet users on social networking sites.”

  4. If I will look at the news, my instinct always dictates that these are coming from journalist. Tuning on TV or buying prints for news are like dictates on whom you trust for responsible and balance news. Otherwise, I care not knowing what’s in the news. I’m a Filipino by heart and soul, but knowing the reputation of Mr. Cooper, I will bet my aces on his play rather than those who criticize his reporting about the coverage of calamity in Tacloban. Besides, I also watched news coming even from the station/network where Ms. Sanches works for, and the news were exactly the same as what Mr. Cooper reported. Mr. Cooper has no apparent reason or personal agenda to lie about his reporting. On the other hand, his critics have stakes they want to protect. If this comment has any chance of reaching the attention of Mr. Cooper, I like to let him know that I salute him for his coverage. Please do not be bothered by those critics who are biased in their views. I have this email address, I can help answering all those criticism for you – dads_118@yahoo.com; my web site http://www.truemindset.com

Copper did just that.. he exposed the truth behind the Philippine lack government and corrupt officials who care for no one but themselves. How dare Sanchez criticizes someone from a different country reporting the truth of what he see’s on the ground sitting on her ass behind a microphone flapping her mouth making 3million pso/yr. Copper was 5 days late arriving and for him saying there was no one there helping is sad. If he wasn’t their, would there have been a global response at all?

  12. Mr anderson may have announced to d entire world how incompetent our phil govt is but somehow it should be a lesson learned. Our government officials should have “hiya” and not rummage over the relief goods or think of how r they going to put in their pockets d monetary aide that the other countries sent to give away to d victims of haiyan. Mr cooper as a media person have the freedom of expression to report what he sees and what is really happening right there in the site ground zero. Korina on the other hand should think before she criticize mr cooper she was never there in tacloban so y say something which she herself not experiencing what mr cooper is doing being there enduring d smell of d corpses. Si korina panay kaartehan kasi may nakapagsabi sa akin noon na mabaho ang bibig ng babaeng yan not literally bad breath but she always say badwords and she got a very bad temper. She is not mabait taliwas sa image she’s projecting infront of the camera. I may not be living in the phils anymore but if mr cooper would be a very good candidate to be ambassador of our country and he has all the qualifications y not he may be able to help our govt fight corruption or anything to lead our country again to progress.

He is a journalist who is telling the truth on what he sees in the site. There is no lie about his report for it was all seen in the news. What he did was a wake up call to all of us. Unlike Ms. Sanchez who is bias in her reports for she is protecting the image of her husband who is in the government.

Did we do some research to what was really happening during those 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th day after Yolanda? Did Mr. Cooper knows what everybody up to in those times? Did anybody realize how very bad the aftermath? No communication, no airport to land the airplanes, no road access, men in uniforms, government employees are also among the victims, most of all Tacloban was even lost in the Philippines map for a couple of days. Warehouses for calamity preparedness was soaked in water and been destroyed. We cannot compare Japan’s tsunami and Katrina in USA with the aftermath of typhoon Yolanda, transportation and communications was available, where as in Tacloban city have none for few days. We have to broadened our mind to understand what was going on. I encouraged you to those who never send anything to help those victims to please share your blessings.

    2. What Anderson Cooper saw was true but does he realize why there are lack in coordination and clear strategy? As Janeth said, “We were not there to witnessed the aftermath. Did we do some research to what was really happening during those 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th day after Yolanda? Did Mr. Cooper knows what everybody up to in those times? Did anybody realize how very bad the aftermath? We have to broadened our mind to understand what was going on. I encouraged you to those who never send anything to help those victims to please share your blessings.” Mr. Cooper, before you finalized your comments and conclusions, do more research on the issue because, I must say that Janeth is right on this. Hence, our government is doing all they can to speed up things even one of the AFP personnel cried as I’ve seen on the GMA TV because he can not believe that peaple still say bad things on their effort to help. Have you realize what your president John F. Kennedy said on his inaugural speach during his first term as U.S. president then? He said, “Ask not what your country can do for you but ask what you can do for your country”. So, instead of yakking, try to give points on how to help on this crucial times in the history of calamity like this, the biggest devastation not only in the Philippines but in the whole world. Got it?

I believe that Ms. Korina made a comment just to save the ass of his husband that really doing nothing. And when he did start doing things he need to photographer to take a picture of him just to prove that he helping. MR. SANCHEZ YOU ARE VERY LAME.

    4. It’s not about who side we are on but the reliability of the reports. As we can see Cooper was in Tacloban reporting his observation and also compared it from the tsunami in Japan. On the other hand Sanchez, was in Manila how can she say he doesn’t know what he was talking about? Then on the relief effort by the Government as PNoy is saying, Filipinos know that it’s not efficient especially those who are affected by the typhoon. A lot of people volunteered, other country helped out but what was happening? it still wasn’t improving.

    5. @benj – you have my sentiments exactly. It is a shame that some Filipinos do not like their fellow Filipinos (just because of that comment) to the extent of lambasting Korina to the core as if she has not contributed to the world of journalism and totally discredit her credibility. Then here comes, Cooper, a foreign journalist with a credibility to boot just like Korina. The only difference is, Cooper is from a “first-class country while Korina is from a third-world.” BIG DIFFERENCE. recall KATRINA…Did the WHITE AMERICANS immediately responded to the calamity then? Everything was devasted. Now, YOLANDA was far stronger than KATRINA and yet, Cooper seemed to have forgotten how it was during the devastation of Korina. Now, Korina may have had information at that time that provoked her to comment like that and that could be the fact that Cooper did not know just yet. KORINA IS KORINA and COOPER IS COOPER. Both are equally credible and distinguished in their won fields. To degrade Korina just like that is not fair and certainly baised. The problem with Filipino is we are too hospitable to our guests to the extent of pleasing them so much. However, Filipinos did not realize that Korina is just human and commits mistakes in the process. If Cooper was doing his job, I suppose Korina was doing the same. Just because she was in an airconditioned room and Cooper was out there, that doesn’t mean that Korina wasn’t doing her job. Sometimes, Filipino mentality sucks. We tend to be unforgiving to fellow Pinoys but we give extra care and sensibility to foreign media just to prove to them that we are kind and sensible. This hospitality thing sometimes, is questionable. I remember an american friend of mine who once told me that he doesn’t really understand the behavioral changes of the Filipinos. He said we are so courteous to other nationals but he observed that we cannot even give the same courtesy and respect to our own race. You know what, I agree with him. But hey, that is Filipino mentality at its finest. Sad but true. Colonial mentality in a Filipino at its best…Shame!!! Now, its over and the time has come to move forward. I am sure that the fans of Cooper will be happy to know that Obama just endorsed him to be the next Ambassador to the Philippines. Great! Now he will have the chance to know the Filipinos for who they really are…

  25. Ok 1st thing 1st. The CNN report was a great publicity. No matter how it was aired the main goal was achieved. The Philippine need of help was broadcast all over the world which lead to the early preperation and coordination to get relief. 2nd the truth is the world really need to focus less in how;us Filipinos’ facing the calamity; for we are still and will be needing help. 3rd The respond that they did to the CNN achor is really poor and just full of broken pride.Philippines is a young country that still in need of help to stand up and learn to run. We are barely walking perfectly. So for me. Just bite your tounge be thankful and be a less critics. Know when to shut up and be greatful. For I didn’t see nor heard any wrong news of the Philippines. The help from its goverment is slow and understandable for the lost of communication because of the damage phone sites, even one mayor stop the red cross. Don’t be too proud people.

  26. I am a survivor of the typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda in Tacloban. The day after the storm hit i walked all the way from my house to downtown and saw the devastation that was caused by the typhoon. People were on foot everywhere scavenging what they can, debris, posts, trees scattered everywhere like an atomic bomb was dropped on our city. Dead bodies were lined up on the side of the road covered by sacks barely concealing the cadavers and the smell is even worse. I did my trek everyday until the 5th day and people were still doing the same thing with the same bodies lying on the same street, now bloated and about to burst. Relief operations went to slow and the mayor even broke down because no one from the national govt was responding to his requests. But instead, the governor, who has a long feud with the city’s mayor’s family intercepted the relief intended for the city and was handing out the goods less affected by the storm and only about 1/4 of the relief reached the city. Thousands of people strived to get out of the city thru the airport and waited for days without shelter, a feeding program or even just water. Mr. Cooper’s report is the most accurate. Korina Sanchez is using her position to defend her husband who is a puppet of the president to destroy the (mayor) romualdez’ family in order to get back for what happened in the past. I beg of our president, please do not bring politics and power play when it comes to saving the people. The people affected by the calamity are suffering for it.
