ANDERSON COOPER APPOINTED U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE PHILIPPINES

imageWashington, D.C. – President Barack Obama has nominated CNN’s Anderson Cooper to be the next U.S. ambassador to the Philippines.  The White House announcement on the nomination came on the heels of Cooper’s live reporting on the aftermath of super typhoon Haiyan which has devastated many cities and towns in Central Philippines.  He is the host of the popular CNN news program, AC 360. His reports from Tacloban, the worst-hit among the cities in the province of Leyte, gained both praise and criticism.

Many Filipinos, including expatriates from all over the world, have praised Cooper’s early coverage of the devastation in Tacloban and the Philippine government’s rescue and relief efforts which he described as lacking in coordination and clear strategy. On the other hand, Cooper earned the ire of Philippine President Noynoy Aquino who asked for “greater accuracy” in reporting on his government’s relief efforts and to focus on the strong spirit of the Filipino people in facing this calamity. Cooper responded on his news program that accuracy has been his hallmark as a journalist and that his reporting had always pointed to the enormous strength and fighting spirit of the Filipino people.

A Filipino news anchor, Korina Sanchez, speaking from her air-conditioned broadcast studio in Manila, also criticized Cooper for his reporting on the government’s less than stellar response to the needs of Haiyan survivors.  Sanchez said Cooper did not know what he was talking about.  Cooper then challenged Sanchez to do her own reporting at “ground zero” in Tacloban. Sanchez is the wife of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas who is supposed to lead government relief and rescue operations.

In nominating Cooper, Obama said that the CNN journalist is fully qualified for the job and brings with him extensive knowledge and experience with political, social and other issues plaguing foreign governments, including the Philippines.  Obama said that Cooper has also proven himself to be fearless, independent, and sensitive to the interest and needs of both the U.S. and its long-time ally the Philippines.

There seems to be bipartisan support in the Senate for Cooper’s nomination. That in itself is a rarity in America.

  1. This is so deserving of him. As a Filipino, now a naturalized US citizen I so admire Mr. Cooper’s unbiased reporting. Just like what you read in the Bible, The Truth Will Set Us Free. It is expected for Korina to defend her husband but she should have not refuted Mr. Coopers reporting as he is from ground zero reporting the actual facts while she is blindly fed with selective facts that the Aquino Govt. wanted to go on press. Her reaction just sealed her fate not to become the next first lady and jeopardizes her husband’s political career. It is just too bad that this Aquino govt. acted like a slow boat to China in responding to the needs of Yolanda victims. Like what Christian Amanpour mentioned in an interview with Pinoy, this could be a defining moment of Aquino’s presidency, too bad it is something that put him on a bad light that people will remember negatively in the history of Philippine governance. It is a travesty of justice when you leave dead people rotting in streets for days. Put this scenario if it is your loved ones, would you allow this to happen? It is in our culture that we respect the dead and provide a decent internment for their bodies but what the Aquino Government have done is a flagrant disrespect of our culture.

Mr. Cooper I applaud you for reporting the truth. Your reporting ignited a spark that made the Phil Government and the whole world think for a moment and resolved to emulate the manner of which people should be informed and get their news. So much sentiments of support are pouring in in news media and other social websites for your job well done and as a Filipino I THANK YOU for your candor and honesty and I couldn’t be more happier if in your next job you uncover the whole truth about the Pork Barrel scandal that plague our nation, so the culprits will pay and suffer, then corruption will be a history in Philippine government.

  4. Korina is a doozy journalist. If Anderson is willing to go down and dirty in Philippines, I would say go for it! There’s hope! So when my grand kids decide to go back to their roots, they would probably realize Philippines is so beautiful it was just governed by corrupt officials who do not know better but to exploit the despondency of poor people in rural areas. And that my friends has been the cancer stricken republic of the Philipines!

  6. President Barack HUSSEIN Obama as always see this as an opportunity to make a name for himself in the International Community. He has been badly damaged in his country because of his lies, deception, and his narcissistic arrogance. I think Anderson Cooper is a good journalist and I’d like to see him do more of this kind of “ground zero” reporting. As ambassador, I have some misgivings.

  9. For those who defend the Phil govmt officials, had AC 360 not reported the tragedy with facts and pictures, those officials would have stayed in their high chairs with feet up along with K Sanchez. Truth is, these officials had a history of hoarding relief goods from past – repack them and stamp their name on it in shameless self-promotion! The govmt did not prepare, otherwise they would have mobilized what little resources that should have been put in place in neighboring islands deemed not affected by typhoon. How is it that the mayor of Davao was able to visit the island badly affected and mobilized their resources faster than the national govmt? Even if AC did not report the incompetences, social media did the part. Just look at what the officials did and did not do. Their bumbling idiocy, shameless plugs, and ineptness are especially evident in what their saying to the media – local and international. How can one defend that? Now, they are forced to get off their arse and visit these places because of international presence. Expose! Expose! Expose! Is now the name of the game. One need not be a journalist to join the fray.

To deliver food and all other basic needs of the victims, we have to send 100 thousand of truck full of foods at the same time. When no one expects the magnitude of damage, we dont have that kind of logistic available to us but we have to do everything we can to send what we have. Anderson Cooper showed up in spot of those thousand and thousand of Visayan shore lines. Now tell me and do the math yourself. Help is somewhere else that can be reach. Any reporter who saw and felt the disastrous experience of the Taclobanons would have reacted the way Cooper did… He just got popular because he immediately expressed the sentiments of the people and was lambasted by a Filipino reporter who had a lot of negatives to say without even setting foot in the rubbles of Tacloban. It was sad to see that it took a foreigner to see the real happenings in Leyte, and our own had to stand at the background and did nothing…

That’s a lot more patriotic than just blindly believing in a bunch of corrupt officials in the government. For reference’s sake, patriotism is love for country. If not for his true and honest reporting our government won’t act fast and that is the sad thing with my country we need someone to push us before we act. This thing won’t have lots of comments on the reporting if only our government have prepared themselves before the typhoon came. They should have station our old landing craft with all the infrastructure equipments, mobilize doctors, rescue personnel’s that are not in the path of the typhoon so they could immediately move in after the storm and not wait 3-5 days after the storm before mobilizing things. The Philippine government should have no excuses but actions is better than words….

But there is someone like Mr. Anderson who care about us even you [even ur stupid he cares for you too] and he is helping us in every way that he can. He did not say no government official … but I think this has something to do with politics… everybody said “sana ang donations & relief goods ay sa tamang kamay mapunta ,mismo sa taong nasalanta ng typhoon.” .

Anyone who felt offended by his reporting obviously know it in themselves that they were indeed slow but are just too stubborn to admit it. WE, as in the whole of Philippines, looked stupid to the whole world? You’re either daft or you didn’t read his report at all because nowhere in his article does he ridicule the people of the Philippines or the government, he simply states the fact that he was at ground zero and he did not see any presence of the government at the time of his reporting. Does that sound like ridicule to you?

Go back to licking the boot soles of the Philippine government you blind dog. Yes, that is me making you look stupid and this is how someone makes another person look stupid, hopefully you see the difference.

He’s there to show the world what’s going on, so HELP that the Filipinos need can be expedited. Learn how to acknowledge the never ending corruption that is going on in the country before you demand anything from anyone — probably one of the ways that the country will get better. AND I am too is a FILIPINO!

    13. Anderson said he saw very little government assistance. Just a few military and police officers and it’s already Day 5. By the time he arrived he was expecting full government support. Medicine should be in all medical clinics, supplies should already been distributed and more military and police officers should have been deployed and looking for dead bodies. But when he arrived, people are looking for the dead bodies of their love ones with very little food, very little water and very little medicine. He went there, he saw, he witnessed… and that’s what he reported. Anderson uplift the name of our country by showing the world the resilience, bravery, spirit and strength of the Filipino people. It’s not us who look stupid in the eyes of the whole world, it’s the Philippine government.

I understand why the Filipinos are complaining. But I don’t see it as “complaining” but instead we have the CLAMOR for the government to do its JOB! We are tax payers, and from our taxes, we are paying government officials to do their job! They vowed to be SERVANT-LEADERS for the people. So much is expected from them. They should not run for office if they can’t handle too much pressure. After all, it’s their wish to be of service to the people! Gets mo?

Again, let me remind you, during election campaigns, they can even go to far-flung areas just to get votes and now? Where are their presence? Not even a single shadow!

Well, kudos to my fellow OPEN MINDED filipinos (not you included) with a BIG heart, to all Foreign AID for the abrupt response to disaster. These foreigners, don’t even know much of the Filipinos in the Philippines, not even a close personal encounter with them, but their RUSHING help is very overwhelming!

If we all start looking at everything as black or white, no sugar coating, no sweeping under the rug, no greed, no politics we can begin to work toward a better Philippines, but if we continue to want to hear only nice things reported about us, if we continue to support corrupt officials, if we continue to idolize power and money, if we continue to perpetuate greed among our public officials, let us blame no one if we continue to be immersed in poverty no matter who is in public office. “Let the Philippines move forward, and let it begin with me.”

Even the world knows the truth..We should accept constructive criticism to make Philippine better and that this should be a wake up call to the gov’t official..In what way did Mr. Anderson Cooper disrespect you? We should be grateful of what he did now at least natamaan mga buto ng mga walang hiyang nagungurakut..

Go Anderson Cooper…we need a leader like you..Bless your heart

    46. When Cooper reported the fifth day, he tells what he see, airport is not fix, no sign of search and rescue. They supposed to clear the airport first for easy access for everybody and all help should land in the airport, emergency like that you won’t expect to travel by land it take you days to arrive and no search and rescue, they just assume they’re all dead, how about those people under the debri or floating for sure some are still breathing out there to rescue….it’s the fifth day Cooper was there and it’s devastating to know nothing was done. @med equip you don’t know what you are talking about, they don’t care if you’re eating rice…..it’s all about how you value life any human being is worth saving even you’re criminal.

May i suggest you listen to Mr Cooper’s report again and again, and maybe write it down and have someone translate or explain it to you…. he just reported what he saw, he only pointed out what is lacking… and please what better can you say about Korina? she should have kept her mouth shut for delicadiza, for crying out loud! what credibility does she have in this point, when for one she is the wife of the person who is supposed to be leading the relief operations (spell biase) and second she is accusing a fellow reporter who is on-site for days while she is in the comfort of her well sheltered news room miles away from Tacloban! where is her professionalism? it is not Mr Cooper’s fault we filipino’s look stupid, it is our own doing, or in this case our governtments lack of it… and also precisely how someone like you who could not handle facts and professional reporting and taking it as a personal attact to our country… again LISTEN TO HIS REPORT AGAIN AND AGAIN SO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT

    49. Apparently, Mr. Cooper made a point..A real one…a fact not just a made up story and Ms. Corina is obviously reacting for her personal interest and not for the common victims of the typhoon. It was much better that a foreign journalist was able to reveal the real-time situation, because as we all can notice, tv stations were handling us news about the on-going relief operations of the government and other local sectors but the truth is only little things has been done..As we can see, the most help received in hand by the victims came from foreign countries..This is an eye opener for the filipinos. Our government is a bulk.

    55. I suggest you listen to the referred report again and again and again and maybe have it written down and translated…. maybe you will then realise Mr. Cooper is only stating the facts and what is lacking, and maybe you will understand why a fellow journalist like Korina who is in the comfort of her well sheltered news room has no credibility in saying that Mr. Cooper who is in Tacloban breathing the air full of death, does not know what he is talking about, and maybe you could also understand why many would say Korina should have kept her mouth shut and maintained professionalism as she is obviously not commenting as a journalist but as the wife of the person who’s supposed to be leading the relief operations. Besides you do not have a vote on this, Mr. Cooper is not running for a position in our country, and what is the point of you stating you know Korina and about you eating rice etc (paki explain). Let us not blame a foreigner who is only stating facts, it is not the foreign reporters who made Philippines look stupid, it is the lack, if not absence of leadership and the way people like you react to factual yet sadly negative comments as if its a personal attack to us filipinos.

You cannot cover everything because of the situation, let alone the camera speaks for itself., while Corina is at her room, Anderson is at the scene and he can only speak of what he saw.

People would rather focus on the image rather than the intentions of the persob. Andersoon Cooper did an amazing job delivering such credible unbiased reports. The whole world needed to see what was really going on. If we relied on just the media in the Philippines, reporters like Korina will only say that “everything is under control.” I refuse to be manipulated by people like her. Seeing is believing my friend!

    64. Hey Med Equip,

You really don’t get it. It is the accuracy and unbiased report of Anderson Cooper and the lack of strategy and slow action of our government that is being discuss here. Anderson reported the real situation in Tacloban city, people there are hungry, thirsty and no decent shelter to sleep at night. For five days after super typhoon Yolanda ravage the city, still no enough food for the people to eat and no enough clean water to drink. Imagine that… five days. People from different part of the Philippines and from different part of the world mobilized to donate resources for the sake of the people in the Visayas region and yet after five days, people are still waiting for aid.

I am a Filipino and I am proud of my nationality. I stand for the unbiased and accurate reporting. Journalism base on facts and actual situation happening in the field.

It was Korina Sanchez who started it first stating that “Mr. Cooper does not know what he is saying” while she was just reporting in her air-conditioned studio. Korina reacted base on emotional impulse since she is the wife of DILG secretary Mar Roxas.

Can you expect her to be a critic of Mar Roxas if the latter did something wrong? Go and be a full-time housewife of the secretary! You can support him all the way even if he’s on the wrong side of the fence.
