ANDERSON COOPER APPOINTED U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE PHILIPPINES

imageWashington, D.C. – President Barack Obama has nominated CNN’s Anderson Cooper to be the next U.S. ambassador to the Philippines.  The White House announcement on the nomination came on the heels of Cooper’s live reporting on the aftermath of super typhoon Haiyan which has devastated many cities and towns in Central Philippines.  He is the host of the popular CNN news program, AC 360. His reports from Tacloban, the worst-hit among the cities in the province of Leyte, gained both praise and criticism.

Many Filipinos, including expatriates from all over the world, have praised Cooper’s early coverage of the devastation in Tacloban and the Philippine government’s rescue and relief efforts which he described as lacking in coordination and clear strategy. On the other hand, Cooper earned the ire of Philippine President Noynoy Aquino who asked for “greater accuracy” in reporting on his government’s relief efforts and to focus on the strong spirit of the Filipino people in facing this calamity. Cooper responded on his news program that accuracy has been his hallmark as a journalist and that his reporting had always pointed to the enormous strength and fighting spirit of the Filipino people.

A Filipino news anchor, Korina Sanchez, speaking from her air-conditioned broadcast studio in Manila, also criticized Cooper for his reporting on the government’s less than stellar response to the needs of Haiyan survivors.  Sanchez said Cooper did not know what he was talking about.  Cooper then challenged Sanchez to do her own reporting at “ground zero” in Tacloban. Sanchez is the wife of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas who is supposed to lead government relief and rescue operations.

In nominating Cooper, Obama said that the CNN journalist is fully qualified for the job and brings with him extensive knowledge and experience with political, social and other issues plaguing foreign governments, including the Philippines.  Obama said that Cooper has also proven himself to be fearless, independent, and sensitive to the interest and needs of both the U.S. and its long-time ally the Philippines.

There seems to be bipartisan support in the Senate for Cooper’s nomination. That in itself is a rarity in America.

  1. I do belive that Korina Sanchez deserves some bitch-slapping she’s getting on the internet right now, but please, seriously you believe this article? It’s not that simple to appoint or nominate an ambassador for a certain nation.

  2. Spelling it out for those who need enlightenment, this article is a “satire” as mentioned by previous commentators. Satire means did not really happen, but meant to drive home a point. So some of us got it and some of us didn’t ;).

And for COOPER ANDERSON , I do salute you for standing for us and sending the world the truth of what’s really going on to our filipino felloman whose facing a super chaotic and overwhelming devastation from this Typhoon Haiyan with less help or worst no help form the corrupt goverment we have..   31. atleast he revealed how slow and lack of motivation that the Government of the philippines have..thanks mr. Cooper! if not because of your news telling the real situation of Tacloban City the government still sleeping and dont care about my fellow filipino who was in pain , frustration, and hopeless because of the typhoon Haiyan! i am proud to be a filipino!but i am not proud of my country!

  34. Yes, it is TRUE because I’ve been following Anderson’s AC 360 and CNN News Report all the time, is like a norm to me that I have to Check CNN what’s happening around the world. President Obama said it right FEARLESS, ACCURACY, SENSIBILITY and DEPENDABILITY because no matter what he has to get back of what is undone to the report. President Obama just made the right decision.

  36. Mr. Cooper thank you for everything you have done to inform the Filipino people how crappy the Philippine Government. There’s nothing wrong in telling the truth. I am proud to be a Filipino but I am Sooo Ashamed of our Government Officials on how they clearly and repeatedly put all the Filipino people into such shame and our country. They never love us nor our country but they love the power and the money they can steal.

    2. In short, Cooper is taking advantage of the deep crisis of the Philippines…. Why???… definitely to uplift his career ambitions!!!! Then should I say Ms. Sanchez was wrong???

      Try to go back and read along the lines of some of the context of his reports and have your own assessment, too, Then, you will understand also the comment of Korina Sanchez…
