ANDERSON COOPER APPOINTED U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE PHILIPPINES

imageWashington, D.C. – President Barack Obama has nominated CNN’s Anderson Cooper to be the next U.S. ambassador to the Philippines.  The White House announcement on the nomination came on the heels of Cooper’s live reporting on the aftermath of super typhoon Haiyan which has devastated many cities and towns in Central Philippines.  He is the host of the popular CNN news program, AC 360. His reports from Tacloban, the worst-hit among the cities in the province of Leyte, gained both praise and criticism.

Many Filipinos, including expatriates from all over the world, have praised Cooper’s early coverage of the devastation in Tacloban and the Philippine government’s rescue and relief efforts which he described as lacking in coordination and clear strategy. On the other hand, Cooper earned the ire of Philippine President Noynoy Aquino who asked for “greater accuracy” in reporting on his government’s relief efforts and to focus on the strong spirit of the Filipino people in facing this calamity. Cooper responded on his news program that accuracy has been his hallmark as a journalist and that his reporting had always pointed to the enormous strength and fighting spirit of the Filipino people.

A Filipino news anchor, Korina Sanchez, speaking from her air-conditioned broadcast studio in Manila, also criticized Cooper for his reporting on the government’s less than stellar response to the needs of Haiyan survivors.  Sanchez said Cooper did not know what he was talking about.  Cooper then challenged Sanchez to do her own reporting at “ground zero” in Tacloban. Sanchez is the wife of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas who is supposed to lead government relief and rescue operations.

In nominating Cooper, Obama said that the CNN journalist is fully qualified for the job and brings with him extensive knowledge and experience with political, social and other issues plaguing foreign governments, including the Philippines.  Obama said that Cooper has also proven himself to be fearless, independent, and sensitive to the interest and needs of both the U.S. and its long-time ally the Philippines.

There seems to be bipartisan support in the Senate for Cooper’s nomination. That in itself is a rarity in America.

  6. Cooper is very much welcome as US ambassador to the Phil. I’m sure he’s pretty much qualified. The only problem I can foresee is that maybe the US govt. can’t afford Cooper’s talent fee from CNN.

  7. Oh, from being JOURNALIST, to being a FUTURE AMBASSADOR TO THE PHILIPPINES..CONGRATS, MR. ANDERSON COOPER SIR!!! I WISH YOU WILL GO AROUND THE PHILIPPINES AND ALSO SEE THE DEEPER WORK OF OUR GOVERNMENT EFFORTS AND ESTABLISH YOUR WORK IN THE PHILIPPINES AS GOOD AMBASSADOR OF GOOD WILL!! IF CORINA SANCHEZ MAKE HER OWN PERSONAL STATEMENTS THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT IS , I THINK BECAUSE SHE WAS HERE BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER THE SUPER TYPHOON YOLANDA. SHE GOT FULL COVERAGE OF THE EVENTS AND TED FAILON WAS THERE IN TACLOBAN CITY TOO DOING A REPORT, WHILE OTHER REPORTERS JUST CAME AFTER THE TYPHOON. NONE THE LESS, IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO RECONCILE THE DIFFERENCES, WE ALL LEARNED THE LESSONS FROM THIS EXPERIENCED OF SUPER TYPHOON YOLANDA!! THE ABS-CBN ALSO IS INVOLVED IN RELIEF EFFORTS AND DISTRIBUTION OF RELIEF GOODS, AND ALSO GMA AND OTHER PRIVATE SECTORS, THAT WHAT MAKES JOURNALISTS, REPORTERS IN THE PHILIPPINES UNIQUE, THEY ARE NOT JUST REPORTING, THEY PARTICIPATE IN ACTUAL HANDS-ON RELIEF EFFORTS…TO REMARK ABOUT SHE IS THE WIFE OF INTERIOR MINISTER ETC. I THINK IT IS NOT VERY FAIR TO INCLUDE THAT IN THE REPORT, WHAT IT HAS TO DO WITH YOLANDA??? SEC. MAR ROXAS DID MANY PREPARATIONS JUST BEFORE THE TYPHOON HIT YOLANDA, AND ALSO FOR THE RESPONSE PHASE, ALL POLICE AND FIRE OFFICERS RESPONDED, I KNOW BECAUSE I AM HERE IN THE PHILIPPINES SIR, BUT CONSIDERING THE LEVEL OF WATER IN THE AREA THERE WILL BE A SLOW MOVEMENT AND THERE WAS A LOSS OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEM AND IT WAS DOWN SIR, RESPONDERS HAD A HARD TIME RELAYING TO THE COMMAND CENTER THEIR SITUATIONS, EVEN FIREFIGHTERS WERE ALSO HIT BY SUPER TYPHOON YOLANDA, I THINK THERE MUST BE A BALANCE REPORTING IN EVERY ASPECT AND INVESTIGATION BEFORE SAYING SOMETHING ON AIR. YOU CAME AFTER THE EVENT WITH AN ACTUAL FOOT AGE OF THE AFTER MATH OF YOLANDA SO WHAT YOU SEE IS REALLY WORSE. I THINK ALL THE OFFICIALS IN THE AFFECTED AREAS WERE ALSO HIT BY YOLANDA. THERE WAS A PREEMPTIVE EVACUATION AND WARNING BY PAG-ASA WEATHER FORECASTERS AND PEOPLE WERE ASKED TO LEAVE THE PLACE. NO ONE CAN REALLY PREDICT WHAT WILL HAPPEN BEFORE THE LAND FALL. BUT THE BLESSINGS IN DISGUISE IS SOMEHOW YOUR REPORTS REACHED LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITIES THAT MOVED THEIR HEARTS TO RESPOND AND DONATE TO THE AFFECTED FAMILIES. THANK YOU SIR COOPER FOR SAYING THE PEOPLE IN THE PHILIPPINES HAVE A STRONG SPIRIT, THAT IS THE BEST COMMENT YOU CAN EVER MADE!! GOD BLESS.

  8. almost everybody agree and favor if the US appoint Mr. Cooper to be the next Ambassador to the Philippines. Why? Because of his attitude, hard work and sincere to his work. So he’s very qualified for that position. And for the Anchor who attacks him, shame on you! To those who doesn’t know yet, this anchor have some other big pending issues against her household worker, whom she maltreated. SHAME ON YOU AND THE NETWORK SHES WORKING WITH! FOR THEY ARE COVERING ALL THIS ISSUE AND LETTING PEOPLE TO KNOW IT.

    1. I agree. Koruna is not objective. She is basically defending her husband while staying in an air conditioned news room. She should have gone herself to Tacloban so she knows the reality of what Cooper Anderson was saying. She is so close to tacloban but so far from reality. Cooper Anderson was far from US but so close to what is happening in Tacloban. We need people like Cooper who is able to see the truth. A big thank you for Coopers and thank God he was appointed Ambassador to the Phil’s. He Deserves it and is a blessing to us Filipinos.
For the Phil. Media, esp. to Korina, see the reality. Did Mar Roxas do a good job? Did the President do a good job despite his announcing his billion peso calamity fund?

  18. Thank you Mr Cooper for exposing the truth about the relief efforts , this is just to show how unprepared the govt. when It comes to helping out the victims of the calamity. This hopefully will open the eyes of our corrupt politicians and hopefully change the govt’s approach in the future.Time and time again we Filipinos have shown how strong and resilient we are, we will survive this and will be back strong as a nation. Thank you again and please accept President Obama’s nomination, you will be perfect for the job, because, we know you care.

  21. Government leadership was too dumb, starving people for 5-6 days without relief goods!!! They could have dropped food supplies using government choppers in isolated areas not reachable by the blocked roads, no airport runways necessary!!! Cooper was right, there was no immediate response from the government, they were ill-prepared for the worst case that had happened, government squandered not knowing what to do, the president promised ready ships and planes in his nationally televised address before the storm, but they were nowhere to be found in the first couple of days. Cooper has been in ground zero and his statements were accurate, I’ve had my relatives and friends who were survivors, confirmed to me the actual situation in the aftermath of the deadly typhoon which has been actually described by Anderson Cooper who has witnessed what has been happening, relayed to the world. I salute and admire Anderson’s fearless reporting despite the odds!!
