ANDERSON COOPER APPOINTED U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE PHILIPPINES

imageWashington, D.C. – President Barack Obama has nominated CNN’s Anderson Cooper to be the next U.S. ambassador to the Philippines.  The White House announcement on the nomination came on the heels of Cooper’s live reporting on the aftermath of super typhoon Haiyan which has devastated many cities and towns in Central Philippines.  He is the host of the popular CNN news program, AC 360. His reports from Tacloban, the worst-hit among the cities in the province of Leyte, gained both praise and criticism.

Many Filipinos, including expatriates from all over the world, have praised Cooper’s early coverage of the devastation in Tacloban and the Philippine government’s rescue and relief efforts which he described as lacking in coordination and clear strategy. On the other hand, Cooper earned the ire of Philippine President Noynoy Aquino who asked for “greater accuracy” in reporting on his government’s relief efforts and to focus on the strong spirit of the Filipino people in facing this calamity. Cooper responded on his news program that accuracy has been his hallmark as a journalist and that his reporting had always pointed to the enormous strength and fighting spirit of the Filipino people.

A Filipino news anchor, Korina Sanchez, speaking from her air-conditioned broadcast studio in Manila, also criticized Cooper for his reporting on the government’s less than stellar response to the needs of Haiyan survivors.  Sanchez said Cooper did not know what he was talking about.  Cooper then challenged Sanchez to do her own reporting at “ground zero” in Tacloban. Sanchez is the wife of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas who is supposed to lead government relief and rescue operations.

In nominating Cooper, Obama said that the CNN journalist is fully qualified for the job and brings with him extensive knowledge and experience with political, social and other issues plaguing foreign governments, including the Philippines.  Obama said that Cooper has also proven himself to be fearless, independent, and sensitive to the interest and needs of both the U.S. and its long-time ally the Philippines.

There seems to be bipartisan support in the Senate for Cooper’s nomination. That in itself is a rarity in America.

  1. (Anderson Cooper) He’s a better Person than any of our current Local Political Leader right now. We in the Visayas would gladly welcome and embrace his presence… Most of us in the Visayas are willing to be part of the American Territories… I just talked to a considerable number of people, all are willing to pledge allegiance to the Flag of America, being a Filipino right now with stupid leaders, with crazy local medias, does not make any patriotic sense… and most of us in the Visayas are being looked down by our own so called “kapwa Filipinos”… We feel and believed that it’s better to live under the leadership of Uncle Sam than to be ruled by the few Elite Families from Luzon, Metro Manila and from Ruling Elites here in the South of Country ,who had been ruling our country without shame in centuries, in National Politics, always the same Family Names!!!!… It’s time for us to wake up!!! Enough is Enough!!!. We want a government like America !!! Look at the Island of Guam??? How well managed they are compared to us…by the way, the Governor of Guam is a descendant from Visayas, Cebu…Its a small Island but with better environment and public infrastructures compared to all of our Philippine cities combined…. By the way? Who asked to separate us from the Americans? As long as I can remember in History, the Visayans did not want to separate from the Americans. Lastly, I can imagine now the face of Korina Sanchez, the aspiring next First Lady, seeing Anderson Cooper walking in the Isle of Malacanang as one of the Diplomatic Personnel….

  2. I live here in us California and I am very amused how the 911 emergency number respond! It feels like the police and ambulance are right beside you, that one thing I really like about USA. The issue about unbiased journalism ? Oh yeah cooper Anderson is way more knowledgable and zero political tactic reporting. I trust foreign reporters ten times when they are reporting in my own country than those local reporters because local reporters are always political strings attached ! Dishonest and maybe paid to say something! Nobody is honest there anymore! Oh except mike enriquez and mell tiangco of GMA 7 … They are 98% honest the 2 % is I rather be quiet…so it’s more trusted.

Good job COOPER, thank you for being the voice when needed most!! God used you in a mighty way….stay humble and honest , we support you…

  6. We need Anderson Cooper here in the Philippines. It’s sad to say that Filipino are kind hearted that’s why our Government officials are taking advantage … We’re paying high taxes and only these assholes are benefiting from it. It’s ok with me if US will take a lead in our country, at least there could be a hope.

  8. Mr. Anderson, i know you have help us a lot and almost all citizens here believe in you.

This could have an adverse effect to the people because we believe in Aquino Administration (though it is not perfect). I am worried because this may result to disintegration of His Administration and might support the Opposition which we believe is the root of all corruption.

The Pork Barrel Scam for example, the case was already filed with hard evidence showing Opposition Officials using public funds (ex: funds intended for Typhoon Ondoy thousand were also killed, but the funds were just in the pockets of gov officials). We appreciate the Aquino Administration for really fighting against corruption. We believe the State of Being of the Aquino Administration is Good if not the best (so far) though it failed in some areas, but as to the totality, they are more than a mistake. We believe that we are in the right direction.

Maybe tensions were arising during that time and you have just decided to use whatever you have for others know that you have that, whatever it is (maybe power to communicate, power of an american citizen, power of pride, etc.)

    Thanks for all

  12. I am a Filipino, but I am more proud of what Mr. Anderson Cooper did. I’m very disappointed on how our government acted on this crisis. Mr. Cooper is just being honest and I think hurt on what hes saw in Tacloban, that the fact he came late on the coverage site, still as if nothing had been done for first aid and relief. I want to thank United States for making us, the country feel that we are not alone.

Mr. Cooper, I’m proud of you! Good Heart! See you in the Philippines! WELCOME! =)

  13. Hail to this decision of President Obama. Rightly so, Anderson Cooper is a journalist par excellence and as the next American envoy to the Philippines, he’ll do a great job promoting the best interest of both countries in mutual respect and understanding with his rich experience covering the world. As a fellow journalist, it’s pride to have a journalist as an American Ambassador to the Philippines.
