Who Won And Who Lost In The First Philippine Presidential Debate In 24 Years

imageCAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – It’s been 24 years since Filipinos saw a televised presidential debate so many were looking forward to this historic media event held last night in Cagayan de Oro City.

The five so-called presidentiables (those who COULD become president), all showed the stuff they were made of: Vice President Jejomar Binay, former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, Senators Grace Poe and Miriam Defensor-Santiago, and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

As always in a high-profile debate such as this, pundits, critics and viewers alike have their own opinions on who won in this oral encounter.

Here’s ours:

Best one-liner responses: Miriam Defensor-Santiago.  She also gets the award for best bi-lingual debater, often aswering Tagalog questions in English.

Best pa-porma to impress: Mar Roxas. He was trained well by PNoy on the Daang Matuwid strategy.

Best x-rated performance: Rodrigo Duterte.  He answered questions the way he always does — in prime time or during bedtime.

Barbie-doll Award goes to Grace Poe.  She was cute and nice and smiley all night; who would ever think she was the most inexperienced among the bunch?

Was there a fifth debater? Oh, about Jejomar Binay…

NEXT GOP PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE WILL BE HOSTED BY QVC ON NOVEMBER 10

QVC Debate
The stage is set for the November 10 GOP presidential debate hosted by QVC

DENVER, Colorado (The Adobo Chronicles) – The Republican National Committee (RNC), disappointed by last night’s conduct of the GOP presidential debate on CNBC, announced that it has decided on a major change in the next televised debate.

Reince Priebus, chair of the RNC, slammed CNBC immediately after the GOP debate hosted by the network ended Wednesday night.

Priebus said in a statement he found the debate “extremely disappointing,” adding that “CNBC should be ashamed of how this debate was handled.”  He vowed to fight to ensure future debates allow for a more robust exchange.

The change will begin with the next GOP debate on November 10 at the Milwaukee Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, originally hosted by FOX Business Network.

Instead of FOX Business Network, the debate will be hosted by QVC, the cable, satellite and broadcast television network, and multinational corporation specializing in televised home shopping.

“We will continue with the theme, ‘Your Money, Your Vote,’ to enable the candidates to discuss their respective economic plans which they were not given the chance to do during the CNBC debate,” Priebus said.

RNC said it could not think of a better network than QVC to host the debate on the economy because of its wide reach and following especially among housewives and retired citizens who control the purses in most households.

Instead of having moderators, candidates will be answering questions from viewers who will be calling in, much like QVC’s regular show format.

CNN TO HOST FIRST-EVER PHILIPPINE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE, ANDERSON COOPER TO MODERATE

imageMANILA, Philippines  (The Adobo Chronicles) – In election years in the Philippines, there are mass political rallies, but no televised live debates.  But that could soon change if a lawmaker’s proposal to create a Presidential Debate Commission is approved by Congress.

Representative Estrellita B. Suansing (1st District, Nueva Ecija) filed the proposal last year which aims to benefit presidential and vice-presidential candidates as it will provide them a good venue to present their platforms and positions on issues that affect the country, and also clarify matters facing the candidates themselves before the voters.

“I hope it will merit the approval of Congress and the president during the remaining months of the 16th Congress so we can already have a Presidential Debate Commission in place prior to the May elections. The Presidential Debate Commission shall obligate all presidential and vice presidential candidates to participate in the debates, and thus, will help the voting population discern who to vote for,” said Suansing, who is also the vice chairperson of the Committee on Women and Gender Equality.

The proposal embodied in House Bill 5269, otherwise known as proposed “Presidential Debate Reform Act”, has already been referred to the House Committee on Government Reorganization and has a counter-part measure, Senate Bill 1797, submitted by Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago.

In anticipation of the first Philippine presidential debate, CNN Philippines has offered to host and broadcast it live. The cable news network has even designated its star anchor Anderson Cooper to moderate the proceedings.  Cooper was moderator in last night’s U.S. Democratic presidential debate on CNN.

Cooper is extremely popular in the Philippines.  His ground zero coverage of the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) in Tacloban gained him the respect and admiration of the Filipinos.  Following his stellar coverage of the disaster, Cooper was rumored to being considered the next U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines.

Upon learning of the news, broadcaster Korina Sanchez, wife of administration presidential candidate Mar Roxas, registered her strong objections to Cooper being named as debate moderator.

Many will recall that Sanchez had her own debate with Cooper when she accused the American news anchor of not knowing what he was talking about in his coverage of Typhoon Haiyan.  Cooper challenged her to leave her airconditioned broadcast studio in Manila and do her own live coverage at ground zero in Tacloban.

“Cooper, because of our conflict, will not be a fair and balanced debate moderator since my husband is one of the presidential candidates,” Sanchez said.
