PHILIPPINES : ‘BUTTERFLY LADIES’ WILL HEAD ALL THREE BRANCHES OF GOVERNMENT

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles®) – For centuries, the Philippines has been a society known for its deeply-ingrained machismo, where men rule and women are relegated to the sidelines.

Not any more.

The Philippines is among the few countries where women are, or have been, heads of state.  In fact, there had been two women Philippine presidents — the late Cory Aquino and Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (who remains in hospital arrest).

Fast forward to 2016.

It is predicted that a woman will be elected president,  as well as vice president!

The Philippines’ unique electoral process allows voters to vote across party lines.  This means they could vote for the presidential candidate of one party and for the vice presidential bet of another.

In fact, incumbent President NoyNoy Aquino and Vice President Jejomar Binay are from opposing political parties.

One woman candidate, Senator Grace Poe, has so far declared her candidacy for president while another, Leni Robredo, is about to named vice presidential candidate for an opposing party.  Both are popular and have done extremely well in national polls.

The Philippine Supreme Court is already headed by a woman chief justice – Maria Lourdes Sereno.

It is further predicted that the next Senate president and next Speaker of the House will both be women.  Among the candidates are Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago and Representative Imelda Romualdez Marcos, respectively.

So the possibility of all three branches of government being ruled by women is just around the corner.  When it happens, the Philippines will be known not for the Iron Lady, but its Butterfly (sleeves) ladies!

Meanwhile, male politicians are gearing up to be part of Gilas, the Philippines’ national basketball team — either as players or members of the coaching team, their best chance of maintaining some semblance of machismo.

AMERICAN SINGER MILEY CYRUS DEFENDS PHILIPPINE LEWD SHOW AT POLITICAL PARTY

CALAMBA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – The Philippine politician who celebrated his 58th birthday with dancing women in skimpy clothes said he is so straight he saw nothing wrong about objectifying women for fun.

Laguna Rep. Benjamin Agarao downplayed a live show of scantily clad women dancing on top of men during the celebration of his birthday and of 40 years in government service on Thursday. It was largely an event organized by the Liberal Party of the Aquino administration.

Reports first floated that the dancing women were sent to the event by Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chief Francis Tolentino. But Agarao denied this, saying the lewd performance was brought by his friend.

Agarao maintained that the lewd performance was held after the oathtaking of LP members in Laguna, earlier attended by LP standard bearer Mar Roxas.

While the event drew a firestorm of criticism, an unlikely ally came to the defense of the Liberal Party — American pop star Miley Cyrus.

Yes, the same Miley Cyrus who twerked her way on stage with singer Robin Thicke at last year’s MTV Video Music Awards.

Speaking to reporters in Hollywood, Cyrus defended the Philippine lewd show, saying that “twerking is a skillful performance act, one that is akin to ballet or tap dancing.”

“Filipinos need to grow up,” Cyrus said, “and leave politics out of performace art and vice versa!”

Encouraged by the inspiring words of Cyrus, the Liberal Party is reportedly considering a new politival campaign theme of “Tuwad na daan ” (bending path), a take-off from the Aquino’s anti-corruption mantra of “Tuwid na daan.” (straight path).

So, ‘twerk pa more!’ (More twerking!)

NEW POLL SHOWS A STATISTICAL FOUR-WAY TIE AMONG CANDIDATES FOR PHILIPPINE PRESIDENT

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles®) – It is unprecedented in the history of the Philippines, and perhaps even in the world: a population and electorate divided equally four ways.

We are referring to a new national poll soon to be released by the Social Weather Systems (SWS), the Philippines’ leading pollster and research firm.

In a survey of likely Filipino voters in the upcoming 2016 presidential elections, the leading candidates each garnered an approval rating of 25% of all respondents, with no room for a margin of error.

four-way

Of the four candidates included in the poll, three — Senator Grace Poe, Vice President Jojo Binay and former Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas —  have officially declared their candidacy for president, while one, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, is yet to declare (although he has repeatedly denied that he intends to run).

However, in a separate scenario where only the three declared candidates will vie for the presidency, each received  33%, with 1% of respondents still undecided.

three

In either scenario, it is a statistical tie, paving the way for the most interesting and hotly-contested Philippine presidential elections ever.
