IN PHILIPPINE CITY, EVEN THE DEAD MUST PAY RENT OR FACE EVICTION FROM THEIR GRAVES

Baguio City, Philippines – Established in the 1900’s, Baguio City in Northern Philippines was developed by Americans primarily as a health resort where the American soldiers and civilian employees could find respite from the sweltering lowland heat.  Designed by American architect  Daniel Burnham, Baguio City was envisioned to have a resident population of no more than 30,000.  Today, this summer resort is home to 300,000 people.

Baguio’s overpopulation has caught up with its dead. The Baguio City cemetery has reached more than its capacity, and the city government has a bright idea to make room for the dead and dying.  According to a new city policy, graves of Americans and city residents may lose their place in the cemetery if no one visits them in five years.

Victor Padua, public services assistant of the City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO), said his office was asking families to execute an agreement that stipulates that their dead are no more than tenants with rights to stay in the cemetery for five years, renewable only when they pay the five-year tenancy fee of One Hundred Pesos. The agreement is also a waiver that grants the city government the authority to remove their dead. It stipulates that the city cemetery managers “can transfer and/or rebury/re-inter the remains at other locations after the tenancy period if the relative fails to pay the corresponding fees for extension.”

Long-time residents of Baguio, many of whom have an average of 5 or 6 relatives buried in the cemetery, are gathering signatures for a petition to be presented to city hall.  The petition demands that the Baguio City Hall be converted into a mausoleum as a way to solve the cemetery’s problem of overcrowding. “In this modern age where almost all city business can be transacted online, city officials and employees don’t need offices to do their job,” the petition says.  It is estimated that the conversion will make available anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 additional graves and vaults for cremated remains.

The Adobo Chronicles also learned that residents are organizing a special “neighborhood watch” to be stationed at the cemetery to guard the tombs 24 hours a day in order to deter city officials from excavating graves and evicting the dead.

Petition leaders have reached out to President NoyNoy Aquino to intervene in this controversy. They threatened that if Aquino ignores their plea, they will come up with a second petition demanding that the Mansion House, the sprawling official summer residence of the Philippine president in Baguio City, be converted as well into a mausoleum and burial ground.

PHILIPPINES BANNED FROM MISS UNIVERSE ONLINE VOTING

imageMoscow, Russia – Since the Miss Universe organization first implemented public online voting for Miss Photogenic and “fan favorite,” the Philippine candidate has always been among the top candidates, if not the winner of the special award — thanks to 30 million Filipinos who have Internet access, not to mention multiple email accounts. That’s almost a third of the Philippines’ total population of about 100 million.

The Miss Universe organization knows how passionate Filipinos are when it comes to their beauty queens and that they will do everything they can to ensure their candidate’s victory.  The organization, however, feels that online voting results may not totally reflect the true merits of the competition, equating the results to a  “hometown decision.”

Because of this, the Miss Universe organization announced that the Philippines has been banned from online voting in this year’s pageant to be held November 9 in Moscow, Russia. It said Internet votes emanating from the Philippines will be automatically blocked.

The announcement angered Filipino netizens who felt that the ban would diminish the chances of the Philippine candidate, Ariella Arida, in winning the Miss Photogenic or fan favorite award.

Despite the ban, beauty pageant experts and enthusiasts have placed Miss Arida in the initial circle of favorites to win the title, which would potentially give the Philippines its third major beauty title this year, following the victories of Megan Young as Miss World and Johanna Datul as Miss Supranational for 2013.

PHILIPPINE CONGRESS’ JOINT RESOLUTION HONORING MISS WORLD 2013

JoinRezManila, Philippines – Newly-crowned Miss World 2013, Megan Young of the Philippines, came home to a very warm welcome from proud Filipinos who wildly cheered their beauty queen for bagging the once-elusive pageant title.  Young is the first Filipina to win Miss World.

The next few days will see a very busy schedule for Ms. Young who is expected to grace many celebration parties, public events and courtesy calls on President Noynoy Aquino and members of Congress.

When Young visits Congress on Monday, she will be presented with a rare Joint Resolution of the Senate and House of Representatives commending her for this extraordinary feat while expressing relief that the focus has been turned away from the pork barrel scandal that has preoccupied the nation all summer.

The Adobo Chronicles was able to obtain a copy of the Joint Resolution which will be formally presented to Ms. Young on Monday.  The resolution reads:

WHEREAS, Miss Philippines Megan Young has brought great honor to the country by winning the once-elusive title of Miss World 2013;

WHEREAS, Ms. Young has reinvigorated the Filipino people’s pride because of her achievement;

WHEREAS, this national honor comes at a time in the nation’s political history where the Filipino people’s confidence in both the Senate and House of Representatives has reached its lowest level since the founding of our Republic;

WHEREAS, this national honor focuses the spotlight away from the growing scandal relative to the pork barrel scam which has siphoned billions of pesos of taxpayer money and into the pockets of members of both houses of Congress and their cronies;

BE IT RESOLVED, AS IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, that Miss World 2013 be presented with the highest commendation for helping save the asses of our colleagues in the Senate and the House of Representatives from the pork barrel scandal;

BE IT RESOLVED, FURTHER, that the Senate and House of Representatives declare a one-year recess from their sessions to appropriately celebrate this great honor;

FINALLY, this joint resolution will have the full effect of a suspension of any and all investigation of members of both houses relative to the pork barrel scandal.
