LAS VEGAS, Nevada (The Adobo Chronicles) – Winning the Miss Universe crown means one has to wear it for a full year until her successor is chosen. For reigning Miss Universe Paulina Vega of Colombia, she is refusing to give up her crown — at least not until January 24, 2016. She was crowned on January 25, 2015 in Doral, Florida.
This next Miss Universe will be crowned at the Planet Hollywood resort in Las Vegas on December 20, 2015 — a little more than a month short of a full year’s reign for Vega.
Per tradition, the outgoing Miss Universe transfers her crown to her successor during the pageant finals. Since Vega has decided to keep her crown, the Miss Universe organization had to order a second crown for the pageant winner this month.
This is the second time this year that Vega has refused to relinquish her crown. Earlier this year, former Miss Universe owner Donald Trump asked her to give up her crown after she had criticized and condemned the Republican presidential candidate for his comments about Mexicans and Mexican immigrants. Trump called her a hypocrite for holding on to her title while condemning the pageant owner.
Because Vega refuses to step down as the reigning queen, there will be no traditional farewell walk at the Las Vegas pageant. It would also mean that for 34 days after December 20, there will be two reigning Miss Universes!
