BREAKING NEWS: JEREMY LIN QUITS THE LAKERS

imageLos Angeles, Caljfornia (The Adobo Chronicles) – Basketball fan or not, everyone is familiar with Jeremy Lin, the first American of Taiwanese descent to make it and make it big in the NBA. He has even contributed a new word in Webster’s dictionary – Linsanity.

Lin first became popular when he unexpectedly led a winning turnaround with the New York Knicks in the 2012 basketball season. He then moved on to the Houston Rockets before the Lakers acquired him in a trade.

But today, Lin shocked the basketball world by announcing that he was quitting the Lakers.

He has chosen a different career, that of actor and comedian.

Many will recall that Lin recently successfully pulled off the wax statue prank on Madame Tussaud’s museum goers. He apparently enjoyed his comedic stint that he did it again while visiting Taiwan. This time, he posed as an employee of a flagship Adidas store. Wearing a wig and glasses, and speaking in Taiwanese, he fooled customers by convincing them to buy Adidas shoes and shirts. No one knew he was the famous basketball star.

Soon after the Adidas store prank, a Taiwanese television network offered him a job and a three-year contract to do a syndicated comedy show, something that Lin could not resist. He immediately called Lakers president Jeanie Buss and tendered his resignation from the team.

Buss refused to give a statement as she was still processing Lin’s decision.

It’s Linsanity all over again.

OBAMA APPOINTS JEREMY LIN AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO CHINA

volvolinWashington, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) –President Barack Obama has just announced the appointment of NBA player Jeremy Shu-hou Lin as new ambassador to the People’s Republic of China.  If confirmed by the Senate, the basketball star will replace current Ambassador Max Sieben Baucus who is stepping down after just seven months in his position.  Baucus is quitting because he says he is extremely homesick and wants to go back to his home in Montana.

Lin, who currently plays with the Los Angeles Lakers, became an international sensation in 2012 when he unexpectedly led a winning streak by the New York Knicks in that year’s NBA season.  This started the “Linsanity” craze in the U.S. and abroad.

In announcing the appointment, Obama said that there is no one who could better fill the shoes of Baucus than Lin.  “Although he was born in America, the Chinese people can very well identify with him because of his lineage,” Obama said.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters that the president is well aware that the Chinese are very fond of basketball and hopes that Lin’s dribbling, guarding and shooting skills will further endear the Chinese to the United States of America.

There was earlier speculation that Obama was considering appointing Dennis Rodman, given the flamboyant basketball player’s demonstrated diplomatic skills in his meetings with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.  However, Obama decided on Lin because he believes that the Chinese will take him more seriously than Rodman.

Lin, 26, will make history as the youngest U.S. Ambassador, eclipsing the previous record held by John Huntsman, Jr. who was appointed by President George H.W. Bush in 1992 as ambassador to Singapore.  Huntsman was 32.

Manila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – This might sound crazier than Linsanity, but world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao has his eyes set on playing against American Jeremy Lin.  Not in a boxing bout, but in professional basketball.  Lin is an NBA player for the Houston Rockets who rose to fame in 2012 after unexpectedly leading a winning streak by his team at that time, the New York Knicks.

It was announced in Manila today that the Filipino boxer — the only eight-division world champion — will be coaching and playing professional basketball starting the next PBA session, the local equivalent of the NBA. Pacquiao will be playing for a new PBA team, Columbian Autocar Corporation, owner of the KIA franchise in the Philippines.  The new team will be named after the Korean car manufacturer.  Pacquiao, as part of the deal, will also become the new image model of KIA vehicles in the Philippines and the rest of Asia.

“I like to challenge icons and famous personalities,” Pacquiao told reporters in Tagalog, adding that his ultimate goal is to come face to face on the basketball court with Lin, whether in the NBA or the PBA. “People think of Linsanity when thinking of the baketball player,” Pacquiao said. “I want to give more teeth to my label as Pacman.”

When asked to elaborate, Pacquiao who is also a congressman  said the greedy video game icon is known to gobble anything and everything it encounters. “Just like me,” he said, “I want to go after everyone that may stand in the way of bringing me fame and fortune — in boxing, politics, in kaoaoke bars, and yes, in basketball.”

Filipinos of course know that “Pacquiao” in the local vernacular means wholesale or buying in bulk. It could also very well refer to being a jack of all trades.
