MANILA, Philippine (The Adobo Chronicles) – The top two contenders for Philippine president — Senator Grace Poe and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte are both facing disqualification charges before the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) —   Poe on the grounds of allegedly not being a natural-born citizen, and Duterte, for being a substitute for a nuisance candidate who had earlier withdrawn his candidacy.

In ancipation of a decision by COMELEC, the camps of both candidates have laid out their respective “Plan B.”

Poe’s camp has asked the senator’s mom, Philippine movie queen Susan Roces, to be the substitute candidate should Poe be disqualified to run for president.

Duterte’s camp (PDP-Laban), on the other hand, is in negotiations with the other Philippine movie queen Amalia Fuentes to be its standard bearer if COMELEC bars Duterte from running.

Before there was the Nora Aunor-Vilma Santos rivalry, there was the Roces-Fuentes feud in Philippine cinema. 2016 could see a revival of that feud.

In the Philippines, it is not uncommon for film actors and actresses to run for political office.  As a matter of fact, film star Alma Moreno has been drafted by Vice President Jeojomar Binay (who is running for president) to be part of his senatorial ticket.

It’s more fun in the Philippines.  We mean, really.

SENATOR GRACE POE’S DISQUALIFICATION CASE DISMISSED BY SET

CaptureMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles ) – The Philippines’ Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) today dismissed the disqualification case filed against Senator Grace Poe.

The case stemmed from allegations that Poe is not a natural-born citizen by virtue of being a foundling, and that she had previously renounced her Filipino citizenship when she and her children became dual citizens.  Poe’s husband, Neil Llamanzares is a dual citizen of the U.S. and the Philippines.

To run for senator or president, a candidate must be a natural-born citizen.

During today’s final hearing on the case, the SET asked Poe, a candidate for president in the 2016 elections,  to prove her Filipino citizenship by singing the national anthem.

Joined by her husband and step mom Susan Roces, Poe proudly placed her hand against her chest and sang the national anthem.

Alas, it was the wrong nationl anthem.  It was the ‘Star Spangled Banner.’

Right there and then, the case was dismissed for obvious reasons,  to the delight of the plaintiff, Rizalito David.  Poe defeated David in the last senatorial elections.

SENATOR GRACE POE MULLS RETURN TO BEING A U.S. CITIZEN

CaptureMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) –   Presidential candidate Senator Grace Poe said she was prepared to return to a private life and look after her family if she were to be unseated from the Senate.

Poe is facing a disqualification case before the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) because of allegations that she is not a natural-born Filipino citizen by virtue of being a foundling.  A ruling against her could affect not only her Senate seat but her candidacy for president.

In 2001, Poe was naturalized as a citizen of the US after being petitioned by her husband who is a dual citizen.

In 2006, Poe took her Oath of Allegiance to the Republic of the Philippines for her to re-acquire her natural-born status. She also requested the same for her 3 children, which is allowed under the same law.

She told The Adobo Chronicles  that she is prepared to once again become a private citizen if she loses her case. “There’s nothing I can do if they don’t want me to be a public servant,” she said.

Whether by “private citizen” she meant U.S. citizen or Filipino citizen, she did not elaborate.
