PHILIPPINE PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANT RODRIGO DUTERTE MAKES IT TO GUINNESS WORLD RECORD

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – A Filipino aspirant for president made the Guinness World Record as the only candidate in the world to file his candidacy while asking the electorate not to vote for him.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte addressed his countrymen in a video after he filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) for president in the 2016 elections. He joins four other major declared candidates in what could be the largest field of presidential aspirants in Philippine history: Vice President Jejomar Binay, former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas, Senator Grace Poe, and Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago. Dozens of others have filed candidacies for president.

In his video message, Duterte, famous for his iron-fist and extra-judicial style of management, asked the public not to vote for him, making him what the Philippines’ Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is calling a “nuisance candidate.”

World record or not, political analysts are predicting Duterte might actually win the election .

It’s more fun in the Philippines.

SENATOR POE SUPPORTERS THREATEN WRITE-IN VOTE IF SHE IS DISQUALIFIED FROM RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Fearful that the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) will rule to unseat  Grace Poe and consequently have her disqualified to run for president, supporters of the beleaguered senator are threatening a write-in vote come the 2016 Philippine presidential elections.

Poe has consistently topped the polls as the nation’s favorite to win the presidential elections, but her candidacy is threatened by petitions disqualifying her from running because of questions about her birth and citizenship.  The Philippine Constitution requires candidates for president to be natural-born citizens. Poe, a foundling, was a dual citizen of the Philippines and the U.S. but maintains she had already renounced her U.S. citizenship.

Leaders of the grassroots campaign for the senator’s election, “Kay Poe Po Tayo,” announced today that if their candidate is disqualified or barred from running for president, they will troop to the polls in May of 2016 to write in an undeclared candidate to become president.  The group emphasized, they will not write in Poe’s name.

Asked by The Adobo Chronicles what name they will be writing in, the campaign leaders said in unison: “Heneral Luna.”

(Heneral Luna is the lead character in a Filipino film with the same title, based on the life of one of the Philippines’ historical figures.  It is the Philippines’ official submission to the 2016 Oscar Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.)

ANGELES CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – The president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)  reiterated the Church’s call for voters not to elect corrupt candidates to office.

“Sinners can be forgiven but you cannot forgive the corrupt,” Bishop Socrates Villegas said. “If we say that corruption is one of our nation’s deepest scars and heaviest cross, and if candidates already have a history of corruption, let’s think twice, thrice, a hundred times before voting for them.”

Reacting to the bishop’s comments, Vice President Jejomar Binay accused the CBCP of meddling in politics by suggesting that Catholics not vote for him.

“May I remind the good bishop that there is separation between church and state, and that he should not be judging my career  and record as a politician, or derailing my campaign to be the next president of the Philippines,” Binay said.
