In Supreme Court Appeal, Maria Ressa Claims Rappler Is Satire, A Protected Free Speech!

MANILA, Philipppines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Rappler CEO Maria Ressa has filed an amendment brief to her case before the Supreme Court in which she is appealing the decision of the lower courts to convict her of cyber libel.

The Court of Appeals in its October 10 decision upheld its earlier ruling that affirmed a lower court’s conviction, and added eight months to her six-year jail sentence.

Ressa and former Rappler researcher and writer Reynaldo Santos were convicted in June 2020 in a cyber libel case brought by a businessman over an online article in 2012 by Rappler that linked him to illegal activities.

In the amendment brief filed by her lawyers, Ressa claimed that her online new source, Rappler, is a satirical site and as such is protected by the universal principle of free speech.

Ressa’s claim boomerangs on an earlier article published by Rappler, saying that The Adobo Chronicles is NOT satire and borders more on “fake news.”

Ex-Comelec Commisioner Rowena Guanzon Mistaken For Illegal Alien!

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Bacolod City Bureau) -Calling someone an “illegal alien” as opposed to “undocumented immigrant” is not politically-correct as we all know it. But that didn’t stop a domestic airport staff from calling ex-Comelec Commissioner Rowena Guanzon exactly that.

Guanzon herself related the incident on her Twitter account:

The Adobo Chronicles reached out to the airport staff concerned to get her side of Guanzon’s story.

The airport immigration officer said she was not calling Guanzon a “foreigner” but rather someone from another planet — an “alien” without proper documentation.

“I would never mistake Guanzon for a foreigner. Her looks, accent and her wardrobe all give it away — that she is a certified domestic,” the officer added.

ICC Issues Arrest Warrant For Nobel Laureate Maria Ressa!

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (The Adobo Chronicles, Berlin Bureau) – The Nobel Prize Committee and the International Criminal Court (ICC) don’t see eye to eye.

While Nobel awarded Maria Ressa with the Peace Prize, the ICC has issued an arrest warrant for the CEO of Rappler, the least-trusted news brand in the Philippines.

In issuing the arrest warrant, ICC told The Adobo Chronicles that ICC judges were unanimous in convicting Ressa with war crimes.

The last straw for ICC was when Ressa made the public statement that the Philippines was the worst war zone she’s ever been to.

ICC judges sided with the Philippines which filed the complaint against Ressa that the country’s international reputation was severely damaged by her public pronouncements.

The judges said that labeling a country as the worst war zone when it is not even at war with anyone is the greatest of war crimes because it is tantamount to genocide of peace-loving people like Filipinos.
