OBAMAS’ DOG BO RELEASED FROM QUARANTINE AFTER MIX-UP

imageHonolulu, Hawaii – Hawaii is the only rabies-free state in the nation, thanks to strict quarantine rules put in place by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture.

State law requires dogs, cats and other animals to be quarantined for at least three months unless they qualify for the “5 days or less” quarantine program. The expedited program requires at least two rabies vaccinations, with the most recent being at least 90 days before the pet arrives in Hawaii.  It also requires a blood test to show the rabies-free status of the pet. Owners who want to use the expedited method also need have to have have a microchip ID inserted into their pet.

Bo Obama was very excited about his first trip to Hawaii, along with the first family . He had all the requirements and paperwork completed months in advance.

However, there was a small glitch upon Bo’s arrival aboard Air Force One. He was met by a quarantine official to examine his vaccination and other records. But when Bo’s microchip was scanned, it showed that he was a chihuahua instead of a Portuguese water dog that he is. He was then put in immediate quarantine.

Apparently, the quarantine official forgot to replace the batteries for his scanner so it was still showing the ID of the previous dog scanned which was indeed a chihuahua.

Two days after the glitch was discovered, Bo was subsequently released to the Obamas, with lei and all, just in time to celebrate Christmas with his family.

In the spirit of Aloha and the holidays, the Obamas did not file any formal complaint against the Agriculture official.

HALLMARK FACES COPYRIGHT LAWSUIT AND CHARGES OF HOMOPHOBIA OVER “DECK THE HALLS”

gay apparelKansas City, MO – Most everyone who believes in Christmas grew up singing the carol, “Deck The Halls.”   It is of Welsh origin, dating back to the sixteenth century.  The Welsh lyrics were penned by John Jones Talhaiarn with English words by Scottish musician Thomas Oliphant.

Now, the Kansas-based Hallmark, makers of the famous Hallmark greeting cards, has changed the lyrics of the Christmas carol on its new design of a Christmas-themed sweater ornament it is marketing. Instead of the words, “Don we now our gay apparel,” Hallmark changed it to “Don we now our fun apparel.”  This prompted the estates of Talhaiarn and Oliphant to sue Hallmark for copyright infringement.

But the troubles of the card company doesn’t end there.  Today, the LGBT organization, Human Rights Campaign (HRC), accused Hallmark of being biased and homophobic. “It’s clearly an effort on the part of the company to banish “gay” not only from the Christmas carol, but from the face of this earth,” an HRC spokesperson said.

Hallmark defended the change saying, “When the lyrics to ‘Deck the Halls’ were translated from Gaelic and published in English back in the 1800s, the word ‘gay’ meant festive or merry. Today it has multiple meanings, which we thought could leave our intent open to misinterpretation.”

Few people were buying Hallmark’s argument, but it remains to be seen as to how many people will actually buy the ornament.

Meanwhile,  the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus just announced that it will continue to use the traditional lyrics when it sings “Deck the Halls” during the sing-along portion of its annual “Home for the Holidays” Christmas concert at the historical Castro Theater. No kidding.

WORLD BANK WITHDRAWS PHILIPPINES’ ECONOMIC GROWTH FORECAST

011712_WorldbankWashington, D.C. – Hours after The World Bank predicted a 7% economic growth for the Philippines,  the international monetary body withdrew its forecast, saying that interns committed an embarrassing data error. The earlier prediction would have made the Philippines a standout as the bank cut its projections for most of the rest of Asia.  The bank attributed the Philippine growth forecast to increased infrastructure spending, consumer spending, remittances and business process outsourcing.

In withdrawing the forecast, World Bank officials said that interns working at the bank’s Washington, D.C. headquarters misinterpreted some of the data they were reviewing.  “They thought they were looking at financial data when in fact, they were reviewing the Philippines’ population growth rate,” they said.

Economic experts familiar with the actual situation in the Philippines have been skeptical of the investment-grade rating received by the country from Moody’s Investment Service,  Fitch Ratings, and Standard & Poor in recent months, as they have with The World Bank’s forecast. “The ratings and forecast are simply not consistent with the ever-increasing gap between the rich and poor in this country of almost 100 million,  as well as the massive political corruption and financial scandals that have pervaded many levels of the Philippine government,” the experts said.
