The Adobo Chronicles’ Quick Guide To Internet Hoaxes

image.jpegSAN JOSE, California (The Adobo Chronicles, Silicon Valley Bureau) – Sylvester Stallone is dead. Jaden Smith has committed suicide. The United Nations has elected a Filipina Secretary General.  Southwest Air is giving away free tickets!  These are all hoaxes, of course.

But if it’s on CNN, ABC News, The Guardian, or the Internet, it must be true, right?

Wrong.

All it takes is a closer examination of the posts you’re reading before you hit that ‘share’ button.  It will save you some unnecessary embarrassment.

Look at how Sylvester Stallone’s name was spelled.

Southwest Air doesn’t have a ‘period’ after its logo.

ABCNEWS.COM is NOT the same as abcnews.com.co.

The Guardian uses an ‘i’, NOT the number 1.

imageOh, wait.  Golden Girls’ Rue McClanahan has died.  True, but it happened quite a while ago.

When in doubt, check with Snopes.com.

Filipinos React To Senator De Lima’s ‘Impeachment’

Dilma, left, and De Lima

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Just hours after watching  CNN’s Christiane Amanpour interview Leila De Lima on Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s war on drugs, Filipinos were shocked at the news that the lady senator has been impeached.

Reaction was mixed. Many rejoiced while others expressed sadness that the escalating word war between Duterte and De Lima has come to this.

The news of impeachment came via the late-night edition of ABS-CBN’s ‘TV Patrol’ when newsreader (and former Vice President) Noli De Castro mentioned De Lima in his ‘nagbabagang balita’ (coal-hot news).

Well, it turns our that many Filipinos heard it wrong from the constantly screaming De Castro.

De Castro was reporting on breaking news from Brazil where President Dilma Rousseff was impeached by the Senate.

Actually, Philippine senators cannot be impeached. Rather, they can be expelled by a three-fourths vote of all members of the Senate. Yes all, including Senator Manny Pacquiao.

What Rappler Will Censor

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Rappler, the popular Philippine Internet news propaganda site, has announced that it will be  ” aggresively deleting crude and disrespectful posts and comments that violate standards of civility.”

In a bold statement on its site, Rappler said, “Debates and discourse have always been anchored on basic principles of human decency, respect, and values.”

“We have zero tolerance for comments that curse, trash, degrade, humiliate and intimidate. Such behavior does little to inspire intelligent and informed discussion that is the foundation of a vibrant democracy.”

When asked by The Adobo Chronicles  what word would trigger Rappler to delete comments from netizens, CEO Maria Ressa said, “the word ‘yellow.'”

So there you have it, dear netizens, post your comments on the Rappler site if you must, so long as you avoid using the word ‘yellow.’ The word is crude, disrespectful, lacking in human decency, respect and values.
