JACKSON, Mississippi (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed House Bill 1523 into law on Tuesday, and while supporters believe the new law will protect people’s right to “religious freedom” from “government discrimination,” critics argue that it’s the “most sweeping anti-LGBT” legislation in the U.S.”
But there is one fine print provision of the new law set to take effect July 1st, that is not being reported in the media: HR 1523 drops all the S’s from the state’s name.
Legislators unanimously agreed that the double S’s in Mississippi will only remind people of the very issue the law wants to ban: same sex.
So effective July 1, the state will be renamed Mihhihhippi, with the H’s standing for “heterosexual.”
DAVAO CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – After coming under fire for cursing Pope Francis during a campaign speech in Manila last year, Philippine presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte said he had been forgiven by the Vatican through a letter he recently received from the Catholic Church hierarchy.
PORTLAND, Oregon (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – There couldn’t be a more appropriate news story for this Holy Week.
