Rizal Park Monument: before (left), and after (right)

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Today is the last day of campaigning for  the May 9 Philippine presidential elections. It is also the day when the candidates and political parties hold their final campaign rallies — called ‘Miting de Avance.’

When supporters of presidential candidate and Davao City Mayor Rodrigo show up for the Miting de Avance today at Rizal Park (Luneta), they will notice something very different: the national monument of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal is gone!

The Adobo Chronicles learned that the city government of Manila decided to excavate and relocate the monument to an undisclosed place to accommodate the millions of people who are expected to attend the Duterte rally.

While a spokesperson for Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada declined to say where the monument has been moved to, he assured us that this was only temporary.  “The monument will be back in Luneta after the May 9 elections,” he said.

Estrada seems to be unusually accommodating to Mayor Duterte these days!

BREAKING: President Aquino Concedes Philippine Presidential Election To Mayor Duterte

imageILOILO CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – It was supposed to be a campaign rally to appeal to voters to elect administration candidate Mar Roxas.  Instead, President NoyNoy Aquino, in a fiery speech on May 3, conceded the presidential elections to frontrunner Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.  The president had finally given up all hope for Roxas.

Despite his concession, Aquino said that he wouldn’t stand idly by if President Duterte becomes a dictator and throw away the freedom fought for by his martyred father. He said he was willing to lay down his life to stop the country from going back to the failed martial law experiment.

This is a first in world politics, where a non-candidate concedes an election on behalf of a candidate even before the actual vote happens.

“I’m just being realistic about it,” Aquino told The Adobo Chronicles.
