MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manioa Bureau) – Filipinos take their beauty pageants very seriously — especially women who belong to the Hashtag Babae Ako (#BabaeAko) movement, like Mae Paner, a.k.a. Juana Change.
Paner took to her Twitter account to condemn, in no uncertain terms, the selection of Angela Ponce as Spain’s representative to this year’s Miss Universe Pageant. The new Miss Universe-Spain made history as the first transgender woman to join the popular international beauty pageant.
Paner said that allowing a contestant who is not “a natural-born” woman is a threat to womanhood and is an insult to the #BabaeAko movement.
Paner told The Adobo Chronicles that while she never tried joining a beauty contest, she still feels that allowing transgender contestants significantly reduces the chances of natural-born women to fulfill their lifelong dream of wearing the coveted crown of Miss Universe.
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – History has just been made when Spain crowned a transgender woman as its representative to this year’s Miss Universe Beauty Pageant.
The new Miss Spain will be the very first transgender woman to enter the international beauty pageant. (Previously, a transgender woman joined the Miss Canada pageant but failed to win the much-coveted crown.)
Today, Binibining Pilipinas Charities which holds the franchise for many of the country’s beauty pageants, announced that beginning next year, it will accept candidates from the LGBT community, more particularly transgender women.
THE VATICAN (The Adobo Chronicles, Rome Bureau) – Saying that heterosexuality is simply a lifestyle, Pope Francis today released a new encyclical that redefines the Catholic Church’s dogma on marriage.
A papal encyclical is one of the highest forms of communication by the Pope and usually deals with some aspect of Catholic teaching — clarifying, amplifying, condemning or promoting one or a number of issues.
The Pope’s new message strikes down centuries-old Church teaching that marriage is only between a man and a woman. In the Philippines, the issue is being challenged in the Supreme Court.
Many who are opposed to same-sex marriage say that homosexuality is a lifestyle that could not be made the basis for the Church union between two men or two women.
But with Pope Francis’ declaration that heterosexuality is also just a lifestyle, the impediment to same-sex marriage will no longer exist.
