MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros has filed a bill that would award Rappler CEO Maria Ressa P10 Million for the honor she has brought to the country by being previously named one of TIME magazine’s “Persons of the Year.”
Citing the law that grants a P10 Million reward to Filipinos who win an Olympic gold medal, Hontiveros said the honor that Ressa has brought to the country is as valuable as a gold medal. She was referring to Republic Act 10699, also known as the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act.
The Senator also urged the private sector to contribute to the financial reward to Ressa, just like they did for Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz.
Ressa, in a text message to The Adobo Chronicles welcomed the move by Hontiveros, saying the money would help her foot the legals bills she is facing as a result of her Cyber Libel conviction and other pending criminal charges against her.
