MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Dozens of editors and staff of college newspapers across the country staged a rally in Mendiola yesterday to condemn Rappler’s Maria Ressa for giving the legitimate press a “bad name.”
Members of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines criticized Ressa for using Press Freedom as an excuse to violate the fundamental law of the land. (The 1987 Philippine Constitution prohibits ownership of news media by non-Filipinos.)
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently revoked Rappler’s license because foreign investors have a stake in the company.
In disowning Ressa and her battlecry of “suppression of Press Freedom,” the student journalists told The Adobo Chronicles that Ressa is giving the legitimate Press a “bad rap.”
