MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – If you’ve seen CEO Maria Ressa’s face lately, there is no denying that her social news media outlet, Rappler, is in big trouble.
She can’t believe that blogger (and now Assistant Secretary of PCOO) Mocha Uson has more followers than Rappler. For the longest time, she has been crying out loud and clear that she wants to “take back the Internet.” From whom, only she knows.
But no such luck. Not only is Rappler running out of followers and engagement. It seems it is also running out of funds.
So in a last-ditch effort to save her failing online news source, she has resorted to begging — begging the public to donate to her company in the name of “free and fearless journalism.”
But if Rappler’s journalism is free, why does Ressa need the public to pay her? And if it’s fearless, why is so afraid of competition from Uson?
The Adobo Chronicles tried to reach Ressa for comment, but her cellphone seems to have run out of pre-paid load. Tsk. Tsk.
