FILIPINOS WILL VOTE ON STATEHOOD IN 2016

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) –  For the first time since the Philippines gained full sovereignty from the United States in 1946, Filipinos will be given the chance to determine their country’s future.

A joint session of the Philippine Congress has approved a resolution calling for a national referendum on whether or not the former American colony should become the 51st state of the U.S. of A.

The referendum will coincide with the country’s 2016 presidential elections.

While the results of the referendum will  not be legally binding, it will send a clear message to the United States about how the Filipinos think of their own government, and of Uncle Sam.

The power to accept any territory or country into the Union rests with the United States Congress.

If approved by the Filipino people through the referendum and favorably acted upon by the U.S. Congress, the Philippines will become the 51st or 52nd state.

Previously, Puerto Rico, in a similar nonbinding referendum, voted 61% to 33% for statehood, while the remaining 6% favored outright independence. Puerto Rico is one of the U.S. territories, along with Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands,  American Samoa and the Northern Marianas.

If the Philippines becomes a state of the U.S., whomever is elected president in 2016 will automatically become governor of the new state.

Already the campaign for statehood has been launched through an online petition with 7,000 signatures so far.

SAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – America’s major league welcomes two Filipinos this week as the Philadelphia Eagles sign football quarterback Tim Tebow and the Golden State Warriors recruit boxer and basketball playing coach Manny Pacquiao.

Tebow is Filipino by birth, having been born in the Philippines to American missionary parents. He hasn’t played in the NFL since he was with the New York Jets in 2012. He was released by the New England Patriots before the 2013 season and spent last year working in television as an analyst for the SEC Network and ESPN. Despite being out of the league, the 27-year-old Tebow remained one of the most popular players around. He has a legion of fans who follow him because of his strong Christian beliefs.

The Golden State Warriors’ announcement today ends months of speculation on whether the NBA team was eyeing Pacquiao after he was seen in a practice session with the Warriors in San Francisco last August.  The boxer is a playing coach in the Philippine Basketball Association, the counterpart of NBA.

Pacquiao is scheduled to fight Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas on May 2. Win or lose, Pacquiao is secured a spot with the Warriors.

Pacquiao, a member of Philippine Congress, previously announced his intention to run for president of his country, but the minimum age qualification for president is 40. He is 36 and not eligible to run in 2016. This gives him at least 6 years to play in the NBA before the next Philippine presidential elections in 2022.

Like Tebow, Pacquiao is a devout Christian.

BREAKING NEWS: VICE PRESIDENT BIDEN SWITCHES PARTY, WILL RUN FOR PRESIDENT UNDER REPUBLICAN BANNER

WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – Hillary Clinton remains the unchallenged presidential candidate for the Democrats, and that’s not going to change any time soon.

The only other viable Democratic candidate for president is Vice President Joe Biden, and he’s not about to challenge Clinton either.  But he wants to run for president.

So, in a move that shocked both Democrats and Republicans, Biden today announced that he was switching party from Democratic to Republican, and he’s running for president under the GOP.

Republicans welcomed Biden’s announcement. They are resigned to the reality that no Republican could put up a strong enough challenge to Clinton — not Ted Cruz, not Rand Paul, not Marco Rubio.  Not even Jeb Bush if he decides to enter the race.

The Republican National Committee acknowledged  that having Biden run in 2016 under the Republican Party is the only realistic option for the GOP to take back the White House.

Political observers say that this new development could spell victory for the Republicans.  Biden’s candidacy will split the Democratic vote while ensuring a 100% Republican vote for Biden.
