AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION MAKES IT OFFICIAL: ‘SELFIE’ A MENTAL DISORDER

Chicago, Illinois – The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has officially confirmed what many people thought all along: taking ‘selfies’ is a mental disorder.

The APA made this classification during its annual board of directors meeting in Chicago. The disorder is called selfitis, and is defined as the obsessive compulsive desire to take photos of one’s self  and post them on social media as a way to make up for the lack of self-esteem and to fill a gap in intimacy.

APA said there are three levels of the disorder:

  • Borderline selfitis : taking photos of one’s self at least three times a day but not posting them on social media
  • Acute selfitis: taking photos of one’s self at least three times a day and posting each of the photos on social media
  • Chronic selfitis: Uncontrollable urge to take photos of one’s self  round the clock and posting the photos on social media more than six times a day

According to the APA, while there is currently no cure for the disorder, temporary treatment is available through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).  The other good news is that CBT is covered under Obamacare.

This is unwelcome news for Makati City in the Philippines, especially for its mayor, Junjun Binay, son of the incumbent vice president.  Makati was recently named selfie capital of the world by Time Magazine. The mayor even organized a ticker tape parade after his city was bestowed the rare honor.

  1. Stop making things up! This isn’t true. First and foremost the medical terms are incorrect! The word “itis” is used only with inflammation of infection. For psychiatric disorders it should have been “ism” like selfism Next acute or chronic isn’t measured by how many episode per day a symptom appears but how long they have it. Usually cut off for acute is less than 6 months and chronic is more than 6 months. Diagnosing psychiatric disorders requires criteria based on syndromes or major and symptoms group together, so clearly this isn’t made by a medical professional. This is made by another attention whore.

  2. LoL this thing is isn’t true…
First if this is true, then it should be published in more reliable source or form of media, not on this site alone.
Second, there is no such thing as a selfitis…

Although its annoying to see someone taking pics of themselves over and over again almost a hundred times a day..

  3. Mukhang madami ditong defensive, mga may selfitis yata.
Perhaps the next study you should do is the relationship between selfitis and inability to grasp satire. They might be directly proportional.

  9. it may not be an actual disorder but anybody can just stalk you if they could recognize where you are posting your chronic selfies during the whole day considering a lot of people posting a lot of selfies tend to have their profiles public for moar attention, information security din yan >_> ooor could be just too paranoid about the thought though ahahah

  13. I guess there’s nothing wrong about taking pictures of oneself. It eases stress and develops self confidence. It’s just like facing a mirror huh!!

  14. For it to be a mental disorder, it must have a negative effect to the persons daily functions. Event then, it would most probably be categorized as obsessive compulsive disorder because of the persistent thought of the need to take the picture( obsessive) actually taking the pictures (compulsive).

    1. Of course since it can be likened to addiction. It still does not excuse the masses from not doing a background check on the article and website and to simply repost or reblog because the title has aggravated them.
