ANDERSON COOPER APPOINTED U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE PHILIPPINES

imageWashington, D.C. – President Barack Obama has nominated CNN’s Anderson Cooper to be the next U.S. ambassador to the Philippines.  The White House announcement on the nomination came on the heels of Cooper’s live reporting on the aftermath of super typhoon Haiyan which has devastated many cities and towns in Central Philippines.  He is the host of the popular CNN news program, AC 360. His reports from Tacloban, the worst-hit among the cities in the province of Leyte, gained both praise and criticism.

Many Filipinos, including expatriates from all over the world, have praised Cooper’s early coverage of the devastation in Tacloban and the Philippine government’s rescue and relief efforts which he described as lacking in coordination and clear strategy. On the other hand, Cooper earned the ire of Philippine President Noynoy Aquino who asked for “greater accuracy” in reporting on his government’s relief efforts and to focus on the strong spirit of the Filipino people in facing this calamity. Cooper responded on his news program that accuracy has been his hallmark as a journalist and that his reporting had always pointed to the enormous strength and fighting spirit of the Filipino people.

A Filipino news anchor, Korina Sanchez, speaking from her air-conditioned broadcast studio in Manila, also criticized Cooper for his reporting on the government’s less than stellar response to the needs of Haiyan survivors.  Sanchez said Cooper did not know what he was talking about.  Cooper then challenged Sanchez to do her own reporting at “ground zero” in Tacloban. Sanchez is the wife of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas who is supposed to lead government relief and rescue operations.

In nominating Cooper, Obama said that the CNN journalist is fully qualified for the job and brings with him extensive knowledge and experience with political, social and other issues plaguing foreign governments, including the Philippines.  Obama said that Cooper has also proven himself to be fearless, independent, and sensitive to the interest and needs of both the U.S. and its long-time ally the Philippines.

There seems to be bipartisan support in the Senate for Cooper’s nomination. That in itself is a rarity in America.

  2. Note that everything he says about the philippines, whether or not the filipinos or the government, we are still on the losing end because we are part of it. That is our territory, that is our home, that is a filipino, that is our common denominator which he does not have.

  4. We love the Filipino People, but not the Philippine government coz most of them if not all are corrupt. It’s been a problem in Philippines for decades. Anderson Cooper awaken them and now they’re attacking him for saying the truth. Anderson Cooper might be black listed by Philippine Government, but NOT by Filipino people. Anderson Cooper is love and trusted, and is one of the hero that Filipinos claims for being fearless to say the truth and stands for it.

And for Korina, she should have went and see for herself before she run her big mouth.

TACLOBAN UPDATE! After Typhoon Yolanda struck, the Mayor of Tacloban requested the NDRRMC to make a “RESPONSE OVERKILL” on the rescue and relief operations. Unfortunately, the response from the National Govt was very cold and half hearted. On Day 2 of Typhoon Yolanda aftermath, the Mayor requested the NDRRMC to deploy 2 Marine Battalions to help immediately establish peace and order and rescue/relief operations. Unfortunately, this plea for help was unheeded by the National Govt. After almost a week, the National Govt sent only Bureau of Fire Protection and MMDA personnel. The Mayor requested for PNP reinforcement since only around 25 policemen were left for duty out of 280 plus police force. Unfortunately, this plea for help was again unheeded. The Mayor again requested the National Govt for trucks and transportation since they got even the remaining patrol cars but this plea was again unheeded. The Mayor requested the National Govt to put more vehicles and personnel for cadaver retrieval but up to now only 4 trucks from the National Govt are doing this. Only 8 trucks from the National Govt are doing relief work. Tacloban is now reeking from the smell of death and relief operations are still moving at a snail’s pace. All relief goods arriving at the airport and seaport are now being controlled by the National Govt. To add insult to injury, the DILG Sec wants the Mayor of Tacloban to write a formal letter to the PNOY supposedly to inform him that he could no longer function as Mayor thereby surrendering authority to the DILG Sec. He wants the letter soon so PNOY can make the announcement and perhaps justify the government’s slow and stupid response to this disaster and lay the blame on the Mayor. The International Community is fully aware of the deplorable conditions in Tacloban but the National Govt is still in denial.

    1. Sorry Cooper, you do not have a vote on ME. I know miss Korina, but she does not influence me. We are living in the Philippines, we are filipino, we eat rice daily, we vote on the same election day and we know the philippines better than you because we are filipinos. I know you have done your job as a reporter, but i demand that you respect personalities here. I do not believe that the government is not acting on their part. Yes, there was delay but they bounce back in time. Everything you say pro or against the people/government/country, it affects us. We looked so stupid now to the whole world, and the worst is that filipinos are overly hospitable. If there was a mistake, fine! But we are more than a mistake. We are bigger that our limitations!

  23. Korina Sanchez don’t contest your predicament, you have no exact knowledge and understanding on what is going on during the moment of Yolanda’s devastation in Tacloban City and the aftermath, Cooper was there and he was involved personally in rescuing the Filipino people over there. Besides, he is an experienced journalist anchor in any drastic situation in any part of the world. Besides the level of your experience cannot hold the reality of Cooper’s record of experience in the area and also in the nature of the field in the media.

    1. Any Filipino reporter / journalist who is married to a government official will always be biased and untruthful with their comments or reports. Korina Sanchez has shown her true colors and should just resign because anything she says from now on will always be viewed with skepticism.

  24. I highly recommend Mr. Anderson Cooper to be the next U.S. Ambassador to our country (Philippines). He awakens the sleeping strategy here on how to respond immediately in times of what had transpired during the aftermath of typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in the entire province of Samar, Leyte particularly in Tacloban City where 100% devastation was recorded. “Mabuhay, Sir A. Cooper!” God bless you!
