Washington, D.C. – President Barack Obama has nominated CNN’s Anderson Cooper to be the next U.S. ambassador to the Philippines. The White House announcement on the nomination came on the heels of Cooper’s live reporting on the aftermath of super typhoon Haiyan which has devastated many cities and towns in Central Philippines. He is the host of the popular CNN news program, AC 360. His reports from Tacloban, the worst-hit among the cities in the province of Leyte, gained both praise and criticism.
Many Filipinos, including expatriates from all over the world, have praised Cooper’s early coverage of the devastation in Tacloban and the Philippine government’s rescue and relief efforts which he described as lacking in coordination and clear strategy. On the other hand, Cooper earned the ire of Philippine President Noynoy Aquino who asked for “greater accuracy” in reporting on his government’s relief efforts and to focus on the strong spirit of the Filipino people in facing this calamity. Cooper responded on his news program that accuracy has been his hallmark as a journalist and that his reporting had always pointed to the enormous strength and fighting spirit of the Filipino people.
A Filipino news anchor, Korina Sanchez, speaking from her air-conditioned broadcast studio in Manila, also criticized Cooper for his reporting on the government’s less than stellar response to the needs of Haiyan survivors. Sanchez said Cooper did not know what he was talking about. Cooper then challenged Sanchez to do her own reporting at “ground zero” in Tacloban. Sanchez is the wife of Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas who is supposed to lead government relief and rescue operations.
In nominating Cooper, Obama said that the CNN journalist is fully qualified for the job and brings with him extensive knowledge and experience with political, social and other issues plaguing foreign governments, including the Philippines. Obama said that Cooper has also proven himself to be fearless, independent, and sensitive to the interest and needs of both the U.S. and its long-time ally the Philippines.
There seems to be bipartisan support in the Senate for Cooper’s nomination. That in itself is a rarity in America.
Thank you so much for your help Anderson. We admire your courageous presence therein the Phils.

Cooper Anderson is a fitting american connection to the Philippines. It would be a great feat for the Obama administration and Filipino-Americans would really support their congressmen on this move for his appointment as U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines. He’s there when needed most ~ to reveal what it is really like under a devastation and more importantly, to prick the butts from the complacency of Phil. politicians, including administrative agencies, who are there when its election time, when it is “safe” for them to inspect(!!), and when the sound of silence and inaction reveal ineptitude and callousness to the cries of our unfortunate countrymen.

yes help us have the kind of government that knows how to respond swiftly in times of calamity, but above all one who have the fortitude to immediately put behind bars the plunderers and thieves that keep sucking the meager resources of the country. The ‘daang matuwid’ is very slow, the plunderers are having their own sweet time relishing the fruits of their evil deeds.

Anderson Cooper is a true journalist. He only reported what he saw and if the PI gov’t was offended by that, then they should’ve done better in governing and helping the Filipino people in their time of need. They were well aware of the storm coming and the strength of it, granted they did not expect that magnitude of devastation, they still should’ve responded much faster instead of waiting for other countries to get there first. If they truly cared for the people, they should’ve had plan A, plan B, plan C and many more back up plans in deploying their help for all these people. Now they have so many donations coming in…I truly wonder how much of it will really go to ground zero in helping those poor people. There should be a third party outside of the US policing and managing all these donations to make sure they get to the right people and not the pocket of the government officials. Maybe Anderson Cooper should make sure it gets to the people…Love Anderson Cooper…best journalist and would be a great ambassador and lucky for PI…they don’t deserve him…

Nope, I did not like Anderson Cooper’s catastrophizing what already was a major catastrophe. It was highly sensationalized and editorialized. That CNN and Anderson Cooper saw the need to respond to criticisms, not necessarily from the Philippine Government nor to Korina Sanchez (who are they anyway), but from other more lucid critics – count in TIME and the United Nations, meant that the kind of reporting they did bordered on the hysterical. Not much difference from FOX News which is the kind of news middle America prefers. And for Filipinos in the country who think Anderson Cooper gave better coverage of the news on Yolanda, you only have to look at local news agencies more valiant reporting like GMA and ABS-CBN.
