PHILIPPINES, THE 51ST U.S. STATE?

imageSubic, Philippines – A leaked document from the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs has revealed secret negotiatons between the United States and the Philippines that could lead to this Southeast Asian country becoming the 51st U.S. state.

The statehood movement, which is not new, stalled in 1992 when street protests by Filipinos eventually led to the closure of all U.S. military bases in the country.

The leak comes  in the wake of a recent request from the U.S. government for an expanded military role in the Philippines under the guise of protecting Philippine interests in its ongoing territorial conflict with China. The request would allow American forces to stay in the Philippines for longer periods of time and be stationed at Philippine military bases.  Critics have immediately protested the request saying, “The American military forces are already enjoying a tourist visa, now they also want a working visa?”

On the other side of the coin, supporters of the statehood movement say that it only makes sense that the Philippines become the 51st  U.S. state, citing the facts that Filipinos already speak English, value the dollar more than the peso (as evidenced by foreign exchange centers in malls and street corners, are addicted to Hollywood movies, and already observe American special days like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. They also pointed out that Filipinos are everywhere around the globe.  This, they said, would further boost America’s presence on the world stage.

In a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Manila, it was also pointed out that making the Philippines the 51st U.S. state would significantly reduce the embassy’s workload in processing tourist, work and immigrant visas for Filipinos.

  1. The Philippines to be 51st state of USA is good to hear but the majority of the Americans would not be in favor because Filipinos are very smart. Most pilipino fugitives are hiding in the US. Americans don’t want to be politically influence by Filipinos. Immigrant Filipinos are welcome but not in exodus as pilipinos are very aggresive and intentional violators but can easily evade penalties expert in Hide and Seek. US firms are very willing to hire Filipinos in all kind of jobs. Filipinos are excellent workers.

  5. This is really funny. The author has just presented the proofs that would show the colonial mentality problem of the Filipinos. An effective and great satire, indeed!

  6. for me I would rather the Philippines to be one states of the USA so that their supports will be fully exerted to defend whatever kinds of intrution from other country. for instance, China now is slowly making undesirable moves against his neighbors. so let’s think it wisely before it’s too late, as adage. you, do you like Philippines to be colonized by china? for me no way!

  7. That is utterly insane to have the Philippines as one of the states. They would rob a beautiful country of it’s precious culture and higher standard of morals and respect that the U.S. Has long since lost. How more arrogant can the U.S. be to think they are so wanted and needed for such a strong country to survive. Boo to the U.S. and that idea.

    1. “I’d rather see the Philippines ran like hell by Filipinos than ran like heaven by Americans”…Manuel L. Quezon. Well, the country has been ran like hell since the Americans left, you still want more of the same?

    2. I don’t know what morals you’re talking about. As for respect… we’re known as the maids and houseboys of the world! Ano ba kayo? Bulag? Even our government doesn’t care about us! I doubt if the US would want a bayan ng mga magnanakaw at mga pulubi, maduming madumi na, binabaha pa! Sa dami ng natural disasters natin, no one will want us. Ganito nalang tayo forever, actually. Yang idea na i-aabsorb tayo ng america, illusion at guni-guni lang yan!
