OPRAH WINFREY FORMS AMERICAN FILM ACADEMY

imageChicago, Illinois – When Oprah cries, everybody cries; when Oprah gets pissed, you better watch out.

The most influential woman in the world – not to mention one of the richest – was perturbed at the fact that the film she starred in, Lee Daniels’ The Butler was snubbed by both the Golden Globes and the Oscars. When the film was released earlier this year, critics thought that Winfrey’s performance as the wife of the White House butler played by Forest Whitaker, was a shoo-in for a Best Actress nomination.

Ms. Winfrey not only has her own magazine but her own television network as well (Oprah Winfrey Network or OWN).

Today, she announced that she is forming her own American Film Academy which will function just like the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences which puts up the annual Oscar Awards.

The new academy’s awards will be called the Oprahs.

As of press time, it wasn’t known how many of the current Oscar voting members will defect to Oprah’s new academy.

HOLLYWOOD CRIES ‘FOUL’ OVER FILIPINO SUBMISSIONS TO OSCARS

imageHollywood,  California – The Academy Awards nominations for the 86th Oscars will not be announced until January 16, 2014, but already, controversy has come to Hollywood town.

Members of the Academy of  Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are crying foul over official submissions to the foreign language film category of the Oscars.  The root of the controversy is the fact that the Philippines has not one, but three entries. These include “Transit, ” the Philippines’ official submisson; “Metro Manila,” the U.K.’s submission and “Ilo Ilo,” the official entry of Singapore. All three have a theme about the Philippines and feature Filipino characters living in the country or abroad.

The protesting members said that  in effect, the Philippines has three entries in the said category. “That gives the  Philippines two extra chances of being nominated for, and awarded, an Oscar,” they said.

The Academy’s board of governors is set to meet next week to discuss the complaints and issue a ruling.

Meanwhile, Ellen DeGeneres, the host for the 86th Oscar Awards ceremonies, is reportedly thrilled about the “triple”  chances for the Philippines to win an Oscar.  It is common knowledge that Ellen has a special spot in her heart for Filipinos. Many of her invited guests for her “Ellen” show were great Filipino talents she discovered via the the Internet, among them singing star Charice, wonder boy Kai Langer and teen YouTube sensation Aldrich Lloyd Talonding.

NEW OSCAR ACTING AWARDS RULES ANNOUNCED

Redford
Redford

Hollywood, California – James Franco in 127 Hours. Sandra Bullock in Gravity. Robert Redford in All Is Lost. They have one thing in common: being the only (or mostly the only) actor in a full-feature movie. Hollywood appears to be picking up more and more on this trend because of, among other reasons, financial benefits — having to pay only one actor instead of multiple actors and extras.

Recognizing the trend, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced a major change in its Oscar nomination rules, effective with the 2013 acting awards.

Actors and actresses featured in single actor films, or being the only one in at least 50% of the entire film, can now be nominated for BOTH best actor/actress and supporting actor/actress. With the new rules, it is now possible for an actor or actress to win two awards in any given Oscar season — both as best actor/actress and best supporting actor/actress.

In justifying the new rules, the Academy said that in films with single actors or actresses,
“they are basically interacting with themselves and that takes some acting ablity; so they need to be recognized for such great skill.”

Will we see Sandra  Bullock nominated for Best Actress and Supporting Actress, and Robert Redford for Best Actor and Supporting Actor?
