Filipinos Very Confused About The May 9 Presidential Elections

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In the U.S., voters are confused about how delegates are awarded to the presidential candidates in the country’s state primaries, caucuses and conventions.  In the Philippines, voters are very confused. Period.

Earlier, we reported that overseas Filipino voters have complained that they do not recognize two candidates in the official election ballot:  Mar Roxas Daang Matuwid for president and Leni Robredo Daang Matuwid for vice president. They don’t recall the Daang Matuwids ever filing their certificates of candidacy before the Commission on Elections (COMELEC).

Now, Filipinos participating in the 7-Eleven presidential poll in which soda buyers can vote by picking the cup bearing the name and image of their candidates of choice, are complaining as well.

The latest total results show that Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is leading in individual 7-Eleven stores as well as all stores combined, by a very wide margin: 58% compared to the runner-up at 14%.

But voters are confused as to who the runner-up in the poll is.  His/her name is Undecided.  And just like with the Daang Matuwids, Filipinos don’t remember Undecided filing a certificate of candidacy.

The COMELEC has a lot of explaining to do these days.

Actor Dingdong Dantes Reveals Why He Quit Aquino Administration

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Last week, we reported that popular actor Dingdong Dantes quit his post as Commissioner of the Aquino administration’s National Youth Commission so that he could actively campaign for his chosen bets in the 2016 presidential elections.  It was rumored that the actor was leaning towards campaigning for Senator Grace Poe, and not Aquino’s anointed presidential candidate Mar Roxas.

Today, Dantes made it official.  He announced that he was endorsing, and campaigning for, Poe for president and Leni Robredo for vice president. Poe is running as an independent while Robredo is the VP bet for Aquino’s Liberal Party.

“I have the highest respect and admiration for these two women,” Dantes said, “and I think that it is about time our country is ruled by two strong women — president and vice president both. The Philippines has always been a matriarchal society and I believe that having women lead the nation will be the only way that we can solve our problems — from poverty to corruption.”

The Adobo Chronicles tried to reach Aquino for his reaction, but Malacañang said the president was still indisposed because of his flu.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – When Filipino voters go to their polling places on May 9, 2016 to elect, among others, a new president and vice president, they will find two unfamiliar names on the official ballot.

The new names are Daang Matuwid for president and Daang Matuwid for vice president, both running under the administration’s Liberal Party.  It is unclear whether the candidates are brother and sister, or husband and wife, in which case, is in violation of the Philippine Constitution’s provision on nepotism and conflict of interest.

Many Filipinos are also questioning the qualifications of the two candidates.  The Constitution provides that candidates for president and vice president must be natural-born Filipinos. Voters are demanding to see the birth certificates of the Daang Matuwids.

A call by The Adobo Chronicles to Commission on Elections Chairman Andres  D. Bautista has not been returned as of press time.

Stay tuned for more on this highly controversial, developing story.
