The Filipino-ness Of Gilas Pilipinas’ Naturalized Players

The Iranian basketball coach has raised a ruckus over the “unli naturalized player” rules at the Asian Games (ASIAD).

Apparently, he believes that Gilas Pilipinas, the Philippine national team, has crossed some nebulous line of Filipino-ness.

In response, Gilas team patriarch Manny V. Pagilinan said the team’s naturalized citizens are very Filipino “sa isip, puso, diwa at gawa” (in mind, heart, spirit and actions) .

Not only do they excel in the Philippines’ top favorite sport, but they’ve also mastered the fine art of ordering “unli rice” at Mang Inasal, the ultimate barometer of Filipino identity.

It seems basketball prowess and voracious rice consumption are now prerequisites for citizenship in the Philippines. No Filipino will argue against that!

The Great Crossover In Men’s Fashion

Fashion designers seem to be in dire straits when it comes to men’s formal wear. It’s a tough gig, you see. After centuries of refining the good old American tuxedo and the classic Filipino barong, they’ve hit a creative brick wall. What else can one possibly add to these riveting ensembles?

Well, it appears the only way out of this sartorial conundrum is for designers to cross over to the side of women’s fashion.

From the glitzy Met Gala in New York (Bad Bunny and Kendall Jenner) to the extravagant ABS-CBN Gala in the Philippines (Kapuso singer Erik Santos), male celebrities are strutting their stuff in outfits that could put Lady Gaga to shame. It seems men have discovered the secret to shaking up the fashion world: just borrow a few ruffles, add a train to your tuxedo, and voila, you’re avant-garde!

So, ladies, watch out, your turf is under threat from backless tuxedos and floral getups. The battle for the fashion crown is on, and men are ready to show that they can strut, too!
