ANTI-GAY GROUP CALLS FOR A BOYCOTT OF COCA-COLA

imageWashington, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – The Christian fundamentalist group American Family Association (AFA) has again reared it ugly anti-gay head by calling for a boycott of Coca-Cola.

Earlier the group urged its members not to accept mail that is postmarked with the Harvey Milk stamp, saying that the late first openly-gay elected politician fom San Francisco does not deserve to be memorialized in a postage stamp.image

Today, the AFA called on its members and the consuming public to stop buying Coke products, or if they absolutely need to drink soda, to buy Pepsi instead.

It’s all about Coke’s extremely popular summer marketing campaign in which coke bottles are personalized with common names of people like Jane, Chris or Paul.

Well, it has come to the attention of AFA that Coca-Cola has been producing a lot of coke bottles with the names Adam and Steve.  Placed side by side, these two bottles become an affront to the biblical characters Adam and Eve. “We’ve always maintained that God created man and woman, Adam and Eve, not man and man, Adam and Steve,” an AFA spokesperson said.

Coca-Cola has not returned calls from The Adobo Chronicles seeking comment on the boycott.

IRISH NUNS PRAY AND PLAY FOR ALS CURE

nunsDublin, Ireland (The Adobo Chronicles) – There’s a different kind of Ice Bucket Challenge happening in Ireland.  Men are pouring buckets of ice cold beer over their heads while nuns are praying for a cure for this neurodegenerative disease called ALS.

But wait, aren’t nuns entitled to some fun, too?

nuns3The Redemptoristine Nuns of Dublin think so.  While they continue to pray for divine intervention to help find a cure for Lou Gehrig’s disease, they also believe that prayer alone will not do the trick.  So they participated in their own Ice  Bucket Challenge in the Abbey courtyard, and boy, did they have some fun.

On their web site, they describe themselves as “an enclosed contemplative community of religious women. Our life is centered around the Liturgy of the Hours, the Eucharist, personal prayer and contemplation. We hold the needs of the world in our heart in prayer.”

We can therefore assume that this was a one-time-only activity for the nuns and that it’s not going to turn into a bad habit for them.

HOW LABOR DAY IS OBSERVED IN THE PHILIPPINES

imageManila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – It’s Labor Day, and most Americans are enjoying their three-day weekend, heading to the beach, visiting with family or firing up their backyard barbecue grills.

How is this holiday observed in the Philippines, a former colony of the U.S. ?

Well, first of all, it is not a non-working holiday in the Philippines.  It’s not a holiday, period. Outside of the U.S., including the Philippines, Labor Day is observed on May 1st (May Day) and is known locally as Araw Ng Manggagawa (Day of Workers).

But holiday or not, September 1st is oberved big time in the Philippines. Filipinos joyously welcome the start of the “ber” months – September, October, November, December. Here’s how this day is observed:

  • Local radio stations start playing Christmas songs
  • Malls start putting up their Christmas decoration
  • Households start putting up their artificial Christmas trees
  • Newspapers start carrying ads for Christmas sales
  • Employees start maxing out their credit cards in anticipation of their Christmas bonus (more popularly known as ’13th month pay’)
  • Politicians hand out little red envelopes with a few pesos in them to greet their constituents, or  really, buy their votes for the next election.
  • Government employees start selling home-made holiday treats to their co-workers (fruit cake, empanadas, espasol and other local delicacies)
  • Filipino expatriates in the U.S. and elsewhere start shipping Balikbayan boxes to their loved ones at home, packed with used clothing, cans of corned beef and SPAM bought from Costco, Dove soap, boxes of Marlboro cigarettes, designer cologne and perfume, among others.

The Philippines Department of Tourism’s meme, “It’s More Fun in the Philippines,” is alive and well!
