Maria Lourdes Sereno: It Was A Mistake To Agree To An Interview With BBC’s Stephen Sackur

60C4531C-8268-4529-B42D-963AB7BC3F63.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) –  It it were a basketball game, the score would have been 100 to zero.  If it were a boxing championship match, it would have been a unanimous decision. All in favor of BBC’s Stephen Sackur.  The loser: Ousted Philippine Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.

During today’s interview on BBC’s ‘Hardline,’ Sereno was pummelled by the talk show host and the ex-magistrate couldn’t get in a single score.

At one point, Sackur told Sereno she was sounding very much like a politician and a die-hard Duterte opponent than a Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.  He also chided Sereno about her personal affairs which he said couldn’t stand up to scrutiny.

Sackur even tried to convince Sereno that Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is extraordinarily effective as a leader who had a mandate, as opposed to Sereno who was an appointed judge.

We caught up with Sereno just minutes after her interview ended and we asked her what she thought of the encounter.

”I was hoping to take my case to the international media to gain support and sympathy, but I failed considerably.  In hindsight, I shouldn’t have agreed to be interviewed by the hard-hitting British talk show host, especially knowing beforehand how he embarrassed Senator Antonio Trillanes when the latter was also interviewed on the same program.”

”Or sana, sinagot ko na lang ang mga tanong niya in Tagalog,” she added. (I should have answered his questions in Tagalog.)

Sereno also told The Adobo Chronicles she should have asked her supporters for a pray-over before she went live for the BBC interview.

Adobo Chronicles Exclusive! Excerpt From Stephen Sackur’s Interview With Maria Lourdes Sereno On BBC’s ‘Hardtalk’

95C8D317-EAD7-4CC7-AEBA-ABB980A2109BLONDON, United Kingdom (The Adobo Chronicles, Berlin Bureau) – How can we forget that infamous interview with Philippine Senator Antonio Trillanes by Stephen Sackur on the latter’s ‘Hardtalk’ program on BBC?

Trillanes was asked if was a Democrat, and he answered, “I’m Nacionalista.”

Well, Sackur reprised this question, this time during his interview with ousted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.  Here’s an excerpt:

Sackur:  Madam Sereno, do you consider yourself a Democrat?

Sereno: I’m a Christian

Sackur:  Let me repeat my question: are you a Democrat?

Sereno: Hashtag Babae Ako (#BabaeAko)

(At this point, the program cut into a commercial.)

Stephen Sackur Walks Out On Ousted Philippine Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno During Live Interview On BBC

95C8D317-EAD7-4CC7-AEBA-ABB980A2109B.jpegLONDON, United Kingdom (The Adobo Chronicles, Berlin Bureau) – Television viewers are used to talk show invited guests walking out during live interviews, but what happened at BBC tonight was the exact opposite.  The talk show host walked out on his guest.

Stephen Sackur was interviewing ousted Philippine Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno when he suddently took of his lapel microphone and ear phones, then stormed out of the television studio.

Here’s part of that interrupted live interview:

Sackur: Good evening Ms. Ex-Chief Justice.  As you know the reason our program is called ‘Hardtalk’ is because we ask hard questions and expect honest answers from our guests.  So let me go straight to the point: did you or did you not violate your country’s Constitution when you failed to submit your SALNs as required by your high position?

Sereno: Stephen, I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I might incriminate myself.  Please talk to my lawyers.

Sackur:  But aren’t you a lawyer yourself?

Sereno:  That goes without saying,  but I still refuse to answer your question.

Sackyr:  Well, in that case, Madam Sereno, there is no point in having this interview.
