OBAMA DUMPS HAWAIIAN SHAVE ICE IN FAVOR OF FILIPINO HALO HALO

Obama with his Hawaiian shave ice. Inset: Filipino halo halo

Honolulu, Hawaii (Exclusive to The Adobo Chronicles) – Most people know that Hawaiian shave ice is one of President Barack Obama’s favorite snacks.  Without fail, he would have a cup of shave ice every time he’s out and about while vacationing in Hawaii.

Today was no exception. Obama and daughters Sasha and Malia were out driving in Kalihi and they stopped by Shimazu Store which sells Hawaiian shave ice.  As usual the president ordered his favorite snack while daughter Sasha ordered something else on the menu: Filipino halo halo.

Halo halo is like the Hawaiian shave ice but is more elaborate with additional ingredients that include sweet beans, coconut, jackfruit, purple yam, rice krispies and is usually topped with ice cream.

Sasha had her dad taste a spoonful of her halo halo and the president absolutely loved it.  He then dumped the Hawaiian shave ice and ordered his own halo halo.

It looks like Obama will be asking White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford to switch the official dessert to halo halo from now on. Comerford is Filipino American.

Michelle  Obama, who has consistenly advocated for  exercise and healthy eating, was not happy. A small bowl of halo halo has about 153 calories (and that’s without the ice cream) and contains 3.9 grams of saturated fat.

PANTONE’S 2015 COLOR: TIKKA MASALA!

New York, New York (The Adobo Chronicles) – Every year, artists from every corner of the design world look to the Pantone Color Institute for guidance on what hue will reign for the next 365 days. Last year’s color, Radiant Orchid, a chirpy shade of lilac, was widely heralded as one that symbolized the economic recovery, optimism for humanity, and a sense of sophisticated purpose.

This year’s color is … drum roll … ‘Tikka Masala.’ Yes, as in Chicken Tikka Masala!

“This tasteful hue embodies the satisfying richness of a fulfilling meal, while its grounding red-brown roots emanate a sophisticated, natural earthiness,” Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said in the company press release. “This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.”

There was mixed reaction among members of the design community. Michael Martin Navarrete Bello, a noted Filipino American interior designer based in San Francisco, said “The reddish-brown color reminds one of rust, the grimy, gag-inducing type that lines corners or frat boy dormitory-style bathrooms.”

Social media has questioned what Pantone calls “a naturally robust and earthy wine red color” as “a color that makes you want to go to Olive Garden or order Tampax in bulk.”

Others, including the American Hotel and Restaurant Association applauded the selection of Tikka Masala as the 2015 color. “It will be a boost to our members’ businesses as we expect our customers and diners to be looking out for Tikka Masala in our menus ” a spokesperson said.

Update: The Adobo Chronicles would like to apologize for a major error in this story. One of our reporter interns apparently misinterpreted the color hue selected by the Pantone Institute. The corect name of the color is ‘Marsala,’ as in the wine Marsala from Sicily, Italy. We have fired the intern since the publication of this story.

FILIPINA WHITE HOUSE EXECUTIVE CHEF CRIS COMERFORD DISAPPOINTS THE OBAMAS

imageWashington, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – The First Family was very disappointed with Filipina Executive Chef  Cris Comerford over yesterday’s Thanksgiving dinner at The White House.

Comerford, the first woman and minority to occupy the top culinary position, decided to go traditional for The White House Thanksgiving dinner this year, serving the Obamas with roast turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, green beans, mushroom gravy and cranberry sauce. The only non-traditional item she served was Michelle Obama’s favorite, egg custard pie (instead of pumpkin pie).

Shortly after dinner, Comerford was summoned by the President to the Oval Room only to be reprimanded for failing to serve lechona whole roasted pig that’s a signature dish in Filipino gatherings, especially during holidays.

“I only have two more Thanksgiving Days left in this House, and you still haven’t served me lechon,” Obama chided Comerford.

The president is known to love pork dishes, including the famous kalua pork from his native Hawaii.

“I’ve heard so much about this crispy and succulent Filipino roast pork (not necessarily referring to the pork barrel scandal that has recently plagued the Philippine government) and I’ve always wanted to try it,” Obama added.

Maybe, same time next year?
