MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Forget all the controversy surrounding Sunday’s Binibining Pilipinas (Miss Philippines) pageant contestants and judges. There’s a bigger controversy brewing involving pageant host, singer-actress Toni Gonzaga.

Gonzaga co-hosted the televised pageant finals at the Araneta Coliseum with the very good-looking Xiam Lim.

The female host got mixed reviews about her hosting duties on Sunday.  Some described her emceeing style as a “breath of fresh air,” while many were critical of her off-the-cuff, often sarcastic remarks which made the beauty contestants (and the judges) more nervous and uneasy than they already were.

But that’s the least of Gonzaga’s concerns.

Today, she lambasted the Binibining Pilipinas Charities (BPC), organizer of the annual pageant, for tricking her to believe that she would be included in the evening gown competition.

“I had to scour the innermost stalls in Divisoria to look for the best evening gown I could find, hoping that I can be at par with the contestants’ designer gowns,” she said.

Gonzaga was visibly very upset when the name of the best in evening gown was announced. It wasn’t her.

After the show, Gonzaga confronted BPC chairwoman Stella Marquez Araneta who explained to her that she may have misunderstood the agreement as co-host. “What I said was that I hope you can wear an evening gown that would stand out amid all the designer dresses that the contestants will be wearing on pageant finals,” Araneta told her.  “I never said that you will be part of the evening gown competition.”

As a compromise, Mrs. Araneta promised to reimburse Gonzaga the full amount that she paid for her blue, flowing, extravagant gown which took quite a lot of space on stage.

The amount wasn’t much, really, since Gonzaga purchased it from Divisoria. And we’re not being sarcastic.

DONALD TRUMP DISQUALIFIES MISS JAPAN, MISS PHILIPPINES FROM COMPETING IN THE 2015 MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (The Adobo Chronicles) – It looked like a scene from the reality TV show, ‘The Apprentice.’ Donald Trump basically told the Miss Universe franchise holders of Japan and the Philippines : ‘You’re fired!’

Trump, the owner of the Miss Universe organization announced that he has decided to disqualify Miss Japan, Ariana Miyamoto, and the newly-crowned Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach, from participating in this year’s Miss Universe Pageant.

The reason?  Both beauty queens are ‘half and half,’ meaning Miss Japan is only half Japanese and Miss Philippines is half Filipina.

Twenty-year-old Miss Japan Ariana Miyamoto was born to a Japanese mother and an African-American father in Sasebo, Nagasaki, the location of a major American naval base.

Twenty six-year-old Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach  is a Filipino-German actress and model. She competed in the Binibining Pilipinas (Miss Philippines) pageant three times, winning on her third attempt. (It pays to try and try again.)

In making his decision to disqualify the Asian candidates, Trump said, “the goal of Miss Universe is to choose a world beauty that represents her country to the fullest extent. Having a half and half candidate  from any participating country is not in keeping with the Miss Universe ideals.”

Activists immediately criticized Trump, a Republican, and accused him of racism.  Trump responded by saying that “this is not about racism.  Rather, it is about celebrating the purity of diversity in our universe.”

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Unlike in the last Miss Universe Beauty Pageant held in Florida, there were no wedding cakes at the national costume presentation of the 2015 Binibining Pilipinas (Miss Philippines) candidates held last week.

During the Miss Universe Pageant in January, Miss Philippines MJ Lastimosa received flak for wearing a wedding cake-inspired national costume designed by a Colombian fashion designer.  Some critics believed that the gown cost Lastimosa the crown.

Binibining Pilipinas Charities head Stella Marquez-Araneta, who is originally from Colombia, later told reporters that she chose a Colombian designer because Filipino designers “were not good enough.”

Well, did the Pinoy designers prove her wrong.

There were no wedding cakes, just impressive and elegant designs by Filipino artists — ranging from the terno to Muslim princess gowns to indigenous Filipino regional attires.  Araneta’s face turned bloody red in shame and embarrassment during the national costume competition. “She ate her own words,” one fashion designer commented.

The Adobo Chronicles also learned that the organizers of the Miss Colombia Beauty Pageant are considering contracting with Filipino design artists to design the gowns for Colombia’s representatives to Miss Universe and other major international beauty pageants.

How the world turns.
