Kris Aquino To Wear Cary Santiago Gown At President Duterte’s First SONA

imageQUEZON CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Kris Aquino, sister of ex-President NoyNoy Aquino is attending today’s State of the Nation Address (SONA), the first by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.

Aquino, in a recent television appearance on actress Marian Rivera’s morning show on  GMA 7, gave the “thumbs up” to Duterte, saying, “I think we live in a democracy and siya ang pinili ng tao. In the same way na not everybody voted for Noy in 2010, but a lot of people gave him a chance.”

The youngest of the Aquino siblings will be wearing a deep red ultra-glam long gown with criss-cross fabric that traces the body’s contour. It is a creation by Cebuano designer Cary Santiago.

Apparently, Aquino did not get the memo from the president scrapping the SONA red carpet and requiring attendees to wear business attire.

Oh, well…

Filipino Fashion Designers To Picket President Duterte’s First SONA

image.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Contrary to tradition, the red carpet will not be rolled out when Philippine President Rod Duterte delivers his very first State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 25.

The SONA has always been an event that many look forward to every year, especially by female members of Congress and the wives of the lawmakers. It is Hollywood Philippine style where Filipinos and the media are more interested in who’s wearing what than the actual message by the president.

It is therefore not a surprise that the country’s top fashion designers have banded together to picket Duterte’s SONA.

Duterte, now known for his simple, unconventional fashion style like the maong tagalog (denim pants to match his rolled-up-sleeves barong tagal0g),  has advised SONA attendees to wear business attire instead of formal wear.

The protesters complained about their loss of income as a result of the red carpet cancellation.

imageAside from the Pinoy fashion designers, people in the jewelry business are also joining the picket. And so is Alfredo Barraza, the Colombian designer responsible for the much-maligned national costume of former Miss Philippines MJ Lastimosa which many say cost her the Miss Universe crown in Doral, Florida.

Filipino Designers Frown At President Duterte’s Fashion Style

Two men in a barong tagalog: President Duterte, left, and Prime Minister Trudeau, right

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The barong tagalog is the Filipino equivalent of the black tie or tuxedo — the male formal attire that comes with strict rules on how to wear it.

It is no secret that Filipino designers frown at President Rodrigo Duterte’s rogue style of wearing the barong which might just give birth to a new, unconventional fashion sense.

When wearing the barong, the rules are clear: button up all the way to the collar, cuffs neatly pressed against each other and secured by  metal or bejewelled links, well-pressed black or dark plants, plain black socks and shiny black shoes — exactly the way Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wore his during the most recent Asia Pacific Economic (APEC) Summit meeting in Manila.

But who dares dictate how Duterte should wear his barong? His preference is unbuttoned up to three levels down the collar, rolled up sleeves (ready to go to work), blue denim pants and brown shoes.

Former President NoyNoy Aquino had his own fashion style — bright yellow t-shirts or yellow ribbon pinned to his suit or barong.  Nobody complained.

So why would anyone complain about Duterte’s style? After all, he has said in the past that the barong tagalog is worn at funerals, so give the man some slack.
