New 24-Hour Convenience Store Chain A Threat To 7-Eleven

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – For decades now, 7-Eleven has dominated the 24-hour convenience store business in the Philippines, but now it is threatened by a newly set up chain — Five-6 — expected to open stores all across the country.

Five-6 (5-6) is widely known among Filipinos as a loan shark scheme whereby repayment comes with high interest. Basically, for every five pesos one borrows, the repayment is six pesos, or around 20% interest.

But the owners of Five-6 told The Adobo Chronicles is a far cry from the 5-6 scheme as we know it.

Rather, the concept behind the convenience chain is that for every 5 pieces of the same item you buy, you get a 6th piece free. For example, if you bought a 6-pack of San Mig Light, you only pay for 5. Half a dozen eggs will cost you the price for 5.

This may not approximate the now popular community pantries, but it’s a good, cost-saving perk that comes with the convenience of a 24-hour grocery service.

Corona Beer Reinvents Itself Amid Covid Pandemic

TIJUANA, Mexico (The Adobo Chronicles, Tijuana Bureau) – At first, the makers of Corona beer felt frustrated over the fact that they are named after the virus that has caused a pandemic, or was it vice versa — the virus named after their beer?

But the Mexican cerveza’s brilliant marketing experts found a way to turn negatives into positives — no pun intended. They have reinvented their brand and renamed it ‘Corona Beerus,’ which is a play of words on the ‘Coronavirus.’

Speaking with The Adobo Chronicles, the marketing executives said the idea came from no less than Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte who has often referred to the virus as “veerus.”

All’s well that ends well.

SAN JOSE, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Jose Bureau) – The top 5 richest individuals in the world are Jeff Besos, Elon Musk, Bernard Arnault, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg — in that order. This, according to Forbes magazine.

But one announcement — the divorce of Bill and Melinda Gates after 27 years of marriage — abruptly changed the order. Zuckerberg has displaced Gates for the 4th spot.

With the Gates divorce, Bill’s net worth of $124 billion has been split in half with Melinda, or a total of $62 billion, below Zuckerberg’s $97 billion.

A lot can happen between marriage and divorce!
