THE VATICAN (The Adobo Chronicles, Rome Bureau) – Many Filipinos were outraged at Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte’s recent public statement ridiculing the saints of the Catholic Church, saying that there should only be one saint that his countrymen should pray to — that’s himself.
But The Vatican has a different take on Duterte. As a matter of fact, Pope Francis just proclaimed the Philippine President as a living saint, second only to Mother Theresa of Calcutta.
In his proclamation, the Pope said that Duterte is very misunderstood. “Despite his oftentimes insensitive comments, he has a good heart. He is a champion for the poor, the down-trodden, and those whose paths have led them the wrong way, like the corrupt and the drug addicts,” Francis said.
The Pope’s proclamation is a big blow to supporters of the late President Cory Aquino who have been advocating for her to be canonized as the third Filipino Saint.
