MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Without any doubt, the Filipino people are bitterly divided over the issue of the burial of the late President Ferdinand E. Marcos in the Libingan Ng Mga Bayani (National Heroes’ Cemetery).
Duterte, in fulfilling a campaign promise, has approved the transfer of Marcos’ remains from the refrigerated crypt in his hometown of Batac, Ilocos Norte, to Libingan Ng Mga Bayani.
While many support Duterte’s decision as a way for the Filipinos to move on, others have expressed objection on the grounds that the late dictator allegedly faked many of his war medals. In addition, protesters say that Marcos’ record of human rights abuses during his Martial Law regime doesn’t qualify him to be buried alongside the country’s fallen heroes.
To solve the controversy once and for all, Duterte issued an Executive Order renaming Libingan Ng Mga Bayani to ‘Libingan Ng Mga Bayani At Iba Pa’ (Cemetery of National Heroes And Others).
Well, that should put an end to this very sticky issue.
