WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – Donald Trump has been called the Rodrigo Duterte of the West because of the similarities between the presumptive Republican presidential candidate and the Philippines’ president-elect.
Both men are controversial because of their no-holds-barred comments and statements during campaign sorties and media interviews. They have made headlines for their sometimes vulgar, sometimes offensive responses to questions from reporters.
Today, Trump once again copied Duterte’s style by revoking the credentials of The Washington Post to cover his campaign on the grounds that the leading U.S. newspaper has been unfair and untruthful in its coverage of the GOP candidate.
It will be recalled that Duterte recently cancelled all press briefings going forward because of what he said was the Filipino journalists’ misinterpretation and misreporting of his public statements. Duterte now channels all his media statements through the state-funded Public Television network. He has also banned local media from covering his public events.
It remains to be seen whether Trump will also limit his media exposure to either the National Public Radio or Voice of America.
American journalists are very nervous about losing their jobs if Trump follows in the footsteps of Duterte.
