London, United Kingdom (The Adobo Chronicles) – CNN received the award for best “Live Television Journalism” for its coverage of the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 at the 2014 Association for International Broadcasting awards in London Wednesday night.

The network was praised for its aggressive reporting on the downing of MH17 over Ukraine, often being first to the scene of disaster and conducting powerful interviews on Russia’s role in the investigation.

The awards judges told reporters that what put CNN over the top – compared to the coverage by other cable and network news channels —  was anchor Don Lemon’s use of a toy plane while reporting on the downed jetliner. No one told the judges that the segment they saw was CNN’s coverage of another Malaysia Airlines plane disaster – that of ML 370 which is believed to have crashed into the Indian Ocean. They also praised Lemon for asking a guest panel the question, “Did God steal the plane?”

Nevertheless,CNN said that it was very honored to be recognized for its 24-hour commitment to excellent journalism. “We are proud of the work of our international news team,” a CNN spokesperson said.
