Chicago, Illinois – The American Psychiatric Association (APA) has officially confirmed what many people thought all along: taking ‘selfies’ is a mental disorder.
The APA made this classification during its annual board of directors meeting in Chicago. The disorder is called selfitis, and is defined as the obsessive compulsive desire to take photos of one’s self and post them on social media as a way to make up for the lack of self-esteem and to fill a gap in intimacy.
APA said there are three levels of the disorder:
- Borderline selfitis : taking photos of one’s self at least three times a day but not posting them on social media
- Acute selfitis: taking photos of one’s self at least three times a day and posting each of the photos on social media
- Chronic selfitis: Uncontrollable urge to take photos of one’s self round the clock and posting the photos on social media more than six times a day
According to the APA, while there is currently no cure for the disorder, temporary treatment is available through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). The other good news is that CBT is covered under Obamacare.
This is unwelcome news for Makati City in the Philippines, especially for its mayor, Junjun Binay, son of the incumbent vice president. Makati was recently named selfie capital of the world by Time Magazine. The mayor even organized a ticker tape parade after his city was bestowed the rare honor.

So, what do u call a person who loves taking pictures of food, nature etc? What a big joke!

you fail to see the difference! food, nature, etc., is not the same as taking one of your own self hence the term selfies.

Well, it is a disorder only if you post selfies obsessively “as a way to make up for the lack of self-esteem and to fill a gap in intimacy”. But if you are doing it for other reasons such as vanity and possibly because you are gorgeous and your friends love to look at you, then you are not mad. Just insanely vain. LOL.

Ridiculous at its best…it’s a good thing i don’t like taking pictures of myself. So what is the diagnosis for taking pictures of ones beautiful babies and sharing on FB etc.? i’m sure there’s a drug for being a proud parent ….. This country really needs to figure out better ways to make money.

Technology could be high but not deep. Therefore, being over depeding on technology or over using it, not for a good reason, is seriously harmful. A simple example is reaching the height of techonology might bring people happiness; however what people might not notice or concern is their unfavarable waste of time.

I think the AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION suffers from what I call “Diagnosisia”, the overwhelming need to make up fake ailments with fraudulent diagnoses to sell more perception drugs/medication. A Shame that big pharma is still writing your policy & procedure.

I’m taking a guess going on nothing but your comment above… you love taking selfies right? There’s no shame in it.. hey they probably have a pill for that 😉

If you knew anything about medicine which apparently you don’t, the term selfitis doesn’t even make sense. “Itis” means inflammation. Inflammation of the self? Last I checked people don’t post selfies because they’re red and swollen. Instead of jumping so fast to your anti-pharma activism maybe you should try adding some credibility to your statements by doing some research? And IF you did some research you’d know this article is fake. You’re welcome.

you’re both right and wrong!
1. Inflammation or disease of, e.g. laryngitis.
2. Excessive preoccupation with indulgence in, reliance on, or possession of the qualities of, e.g. televisionitis.
in this case, selfitis: definition #2! he article is correct.
on another note, how your write gives a ‘first impression’ to others. it’s too bad that people can’t have a round table, intelligent discussion without accusation, vitriol, making sure they are correct, and the like.

When there was no social media, was selfie a disorder?
Cos from 1839 till social media started selfie was a technic:
A style in photography I argue this cos the post is one side generalization. This is bad research. I argue that ppl who hardly do selfies don’t bcos of one or many reasons
1.They don’t have camera
2. They cant use a camera
3. They lack self confidence
4. They don’t like their looks
5. They have phobia for camera (confirmed: kids have this, my younger sister is an example.
6. There may be more than the 5reasons above.
Why should these shrinks term selfie as a disorder without leaving room for creative expression.
My point is that creativity or photography style shouldn’t be ruled out.
Imagine that phone manufacturers bought into this lie: and they want to remove the face camera on phones… More concerned about the health of their users…
If it is not foolishness and fake post. How will they do video calls. Oooh video calls are also selfies ba?
My point again. They should term portrait photography as a disorder. The diff is that u don’t use ur hands to take d shots yet u put it up on social media or keep it in your phones.
I agree that there are ppl who try to make up for what they lack by putting up their pix online…
Truth is people who over do it need attention. Uploading pix ur personal pix per second or everyday is a disorder. You lack sth. You need attention. But for shrinks to generalize selfie as a disorder is either a strange doctrine or one of the heights of human stupidity.
Yes some ppl over do it. This is arguable. But if this statement is officially true, balance is needed.

What a relief! Now we know it’s Selfitis, the sufferers can be offered appropriate treatment. Of course Selfitis doesn’t apply to celebrities, like Grumpy Cat.

It’s not even American Psychiatric Association. Although it exists, i believe that the American PSYCHOLOGICAL association are the one who decides things like this.
A comment about the site. Yes, it is a site that shows jokes or whatnot however, i find posting things like this are inappropriate. Although you have claimed to post unbelievable news, some people may not understand what it really means (that you are posting News Satire). This may greatly affect the people’s psychological welfare if they believed this to be true. They may undergo self diagnosis and believe that they do have a mental problem resulting to more mental problem. Just saying. Thank you!

Exactly. however there are actually studies underway for the toddlers of a social media/selfie generation. My sister in-law has a toddler brother who is quick to snap up smart phones– it’s going to make for an interesting generation with the internet and instant gratification at the tips of their fingers. Imagine them having to *gasp* wait for a burger at Denny’s. I’m picturing the Marty McFly Jr of 2015 complaining “is the pizza done yet?” 15 seconds into the 30 seconds it took to rehydrate.
