HOLLYWOOD REDEFINES THE MEANING OF ‘ASIAN’

HOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles) –  First, Emma Stone was cast to play Allison Ng, a Hawaiian-Asian character in the newly-released film, ‘Aloha.’ Now, Tilda Swinton is about to play an Asian character in a comic film now in production.

The Oscar-winning actress is poised to star as the Ancient One in the upcoming Marvel superhero film Doctor Strange, despite the character’s originally written gender and ethnicity. The character is supposed to be a 500-year-old Tibetan sorcerer.

While Marvel’s consideration to cast a female as the male Sorcerer Supreme is being praised by some fans of the franchise, others are upset that a white actress has been cast as an Asian character.

In traditional Marvel storylines, the Ancient One was a peaceful male farmer of Asian descent, which Swinton is most certainly not.

Not everyone is offended or upset by this new Hollywood trend of casting white actors to play Asian characters.  Asian actors see this as an opportunity for them to be cast as white, blue-eyed and blonde characters.

THE OSCARS: ‘BOYHOOD’ SEQUEL STARTS FILMING

Boyhood_filmHOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – ‘Boyhood,’ one of this year’s Oscar nominees for Best Picture, will have a much-awaited sequel and has started filming, according to reliable insider sources in Hollywood.

‘Boyhood’ captures the joys and pitfalls of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (Ellar Coltrane), his parents (Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke) and his sister (Lorelei Linklater). Vignettes, filmed with the same cast over the course of 12 years, capture family meals, road trips, birthday parties, graduations and other important milestones. Songs from Coldplay, Arcade Fire and other artists capture the time period. It is directed by Richard Linklater.

The sequel, with a working title, ‘Manhood,’ will have the same cast and the same director.

It is scheduled to open in theaters worldwide in the summer of 2027 — in 12 years to be  exact. Mark your calendars!

BEST PICTURE CATEGORY ELIMINATED FROM THIS YEAR’S OSCARS!

imageHOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – For the Oscars, actors vote for actors, directors vote for directors, writers vote for writers — at least in the first round of nominations. But all voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences get to cast their ballot for Best Picture as well as the other category winners to be announced this Sunday.

So one would expect all 6,000 plus Oscar voters to have seen the 8 nominees for this year’s Best Picture, right?

Wrong!

A poll conducted by The Hollywood Reporter shows that about 6 percent of Oscars voters have not seen the Best Picture nominees, and that of those who have seen the films, majority saw it on screeners — in other words, on DVD.

Recognizing that film industry insiders no longer want to sit in a crowded theater or listen to their fellow audience members talk and text during the movie, The Academy Of Motion Picture Arts And Sciences voted today to change the name of their top award from “Best Picture” to “Best DVD.”

An anonymous source within the academy confided: “We only wish this poll had been conducted years ago, so that the Oscars from the 80’s and 90’s could have accurately been given for ‘Best VHS Tape’.”
