MOVE OVER MANNY PACQUIAO, HERE COMES THE TRUE FIGHT OF THE CENTURY

The true 'Fight of the Century'
The true ‘Fight of the Century’

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – For millions of Filipinos disappointed over the supposed ‘Fight of the Century’ between countryman Manny Pacquiao and American Floyd Mayweather, there is light at the end of the tunnel. The real boxing match of the century is in the offing.

In the north corner: former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas. In the south corner: Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte. Presidential candidates both.

It all started with a word war between the presidential hopefuls, with Roxas saying that a peaceful Davao City under Duterte was a myth, and the mayor saying that Roxas’ degree from Wharton School of Business (at University of Pennsylvania) was a myth.

Duterte then said that he wanted to slap Roxas for insulting the people of Davao, to which Roxas replied:  “Sa dami ng problema na hinaharap ng ating bansa, ikaw nauuwi ka sa kung ano-anong mga kalokohan. Gawin mo nalang kung ano gusto mo gawin. Sampalan? Bakit pa sampalan pambabae yan. Suntukan nalang.” (Of all the problems our country is facing, you only think about ridiculous things. Do what you will. A slapping match? Why a slapping match, it’s for women. How about a fistfight.)

And so the boxing match is set. Both camps are finalizing negotiations with the venue at the Philippine Arena.

President NoyNoy Aquino has already agreed to be the official referee.

The fight will be aired live on CNN Philippines and will be available for viewing around the world via Pay-Per-View.

MANNY PACQUIAO BEGS FLOYD MAYWEATHER TO RECONSIDER RETIREMENT

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (The Adobo Chronicles)  – Filipino champion boxer Manny Pacquiao has asked Floyd Mayweather to reconsider his decision to hang up his gloves.

Mayweather, undefeated after 49 boxing fights, announced his decision yesterday.

Pacquiao, who earlier this year lost to Mayweather in what was billed as the “Fight of the Century” in Las Vegas, has announced that he was running for Philippine senator in the 2016 elections.  However, he also said that he would fight one more bout in the ring before he hangs up his gloves.  He had hoped for a rematch with Mayweather.

“I beg of Mayweather to give me one more chance to rebuild my reputation as a boxer,” Pacquiao said.  “Besides, retiring after 49 wins is not as impressive a record as 50 wins.”

“But if given the chance to face Mayweather again, I want to be the boxer that will stop the American from his 50th undefeated record,” Pacquiao added.

The Mayweather camp has not responded so far to Pacquiao’s challenge.

WILL THE REAL WBO WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPION PLEASE STEP INTO THE RING?

LAS VEGAS, Nevada ( The Adobo Chronicles® ) – Timothy Bradley defeated Manny Pacquiao. Then Pacquiao defeated Bradley. Then Floyd Mayweather defeated Pacquiao. Then Bradley defeated Jessie Vargas. Then Bradley becomes the new  welterweight champion.  Then  Mayweather is stripped of his WBO welterweight title. Vargas protests. Pacquiao protests.

In the sport of boxing, judges’ decisions are oftentimes controversial and the rules can be confusing. Worse, reporting  on it could be very complicated.

Even before the WBO decided to strip Mayweather of his welterweight title, that belt was already up for grabs last June 27, between Bradley and Vargas.  The bout was held at the StubHub Center in Carson, California which ended with, what else, a controversy.

Drama ensued during the June 27 fight after Referee Pat Russell stopped the fight with ten seconds left in the final round because he said he heard a bell.  Vargas had then just dealt Bradley with a mammoth right hook, and Bradley was practically out in his feet.  When Russell waved his arms, Vargas believed he had won the fight and began celebrating his upset victory. Russell then scrambled to tell everyone that he didn’t stop the fight because of a knockout. In the end the judges determined Bradley to be the winner.

So, Vargas filed a formal appeal with the California State Athletic Commission over the controversial ending of his unanimous decision loss to Bradley.

Pacquiao, on the other hand, filed an appeal with the WBO, claiming that since Mayweather’s welterweight title was won against the Filipino boxer, then he should inherit the belt, not Bradley, or Vargas if he wins his appeal.
