THE MISSING LINK IN THE FILM ‘ALOHA’

HOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – One of the biggest criticism about the newly-released film, ‘Aloha,’ is the casting of Emma Stone as a ‘hapa,’ a Hawaiian term that refers to someone who is of mixed heritage.

Stone plays the role of Allison Ng (pronounced ‘ING’), a U.S. Air Force pilot who is a quarter Chinese, a quarter Hawaiian, and a quarter Swedish. (Stone, in real life, is part Swedish.)

Asian American groups have protested the fact that the character was not played by an actress of Asian or Pacific Islander heritage.

The film’s director, Cameron Crowe (‘Jerry McGuire’) maintained that  because of her Swedish heritage, Stone was a perfect fit for the role.

Critics, however, continue to be puzzled by a missing link to the character of Allison Ng. “If Ng is supposed to be a quarter Chinese, a quarter Hawaiian, and a quarter Swedish, what race or ethnicity is the remainding quarter? ” the critics asked.

Crowe could not give a response and referred media questions to the film’s writer.

Oh  wait, Crowe IS the writer.

HOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – Cameron Crowe, director of ‘Aloha,’ is finally breaking his silence and is responding to the long list of criticism regarding the absence of Asians and Pacific Islanders in this newly-released film set in Hawaii.

Native Hawaiians are protesting the use of their most sacred and revered word as the title of the film which had nothing to do with the local culture. Asian Americans have also criticized the fact that the stellar cast of ‘Aloha’ does not include a single Asian American actor. The most recent criticism of the film is that a white actress (Emma Stone) was cast as Allison Ng who is supposed to be part Hawaiian and part Chinese.

Crowe did not address the choice of the film’s title but mentioned that Stone’s character was supposed to be also part Swedish. More importantly, Crowe said that “No Hawaiians or Asians were harmed during the filming of ‘Aloha,’ so what’s the big deal?”

FILM: ‘ALOHA’ (HAWAII VERSION) OPENS TODAY IN HONOLULU

HONOLULU, Hawaii (The Adobo Chronicles) – Columbia Pictures is releasing a slightly different version of the new film ‘Aloha’ in Oahu and the rest of the neighbor islands.

It is practically the same film with a different title.  The local version of the Cameron Crowe film is titled “Haoles.” It stars Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Bill Murray, Rachel Adams and Alec Baldwin.

The film is about a celebrated military contractor who returns to the site of his greatest career triumphs and re-connects with a long-ago love while unexpectedly falling for the hard-charging Air Force watchdog assigned to him.

Columbia Pictures agreed to change the title of the film’s Hawaii version in response to criticism that except for a few unnamed extras, the film features an all-white, non-Asian or Pacific Islander cast — despite it being set in Hawaii.

Some Native Hawaiians also frowned on what they said was the commercialization of one of the most sacred and beautiful Hawaiian words.
