MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – A short video message posted by Philippine presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte asking Filipinos not to vote for him has gone viral.  It was an attempt by the Davao City mayor to reach out to millennials and netizens, many of whom get their news from Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

International readers of The Adobo Chronicles have reached out to us to translate into English Duterte’s message  which was entirely delivered in Tagalog.

Here’s is the best attempt by our language experts:

“My name is Rodrigo Duterte. I am ready to be of service to the Philippines and the Filipino people.  This nation and our people can be great again.  However, if you don’t want me to personally execute criminals, don’t vote for me.  If you don’t want me to abolish Congress, don’t vote for me.  If you don’t want me forcing smokers to swallow their cigarette butts, don’t vote for me.  If you don’t want me forcing laglag bala (bullet planting) perpetrators at NAIA (Ninoy Aquino International Airport) to swallow the bullets, don’t vote for me. If you don’t want a president with a Visayan accent, don’t vote for me. If you want a beautiful and fashionable First Lady, vote for Mar Roxas.  If you want to continue watching AlDub, don’t vote for me.”

“If you decide to vote for me, I promise you that I will turn Manila from the “Gates of Hell” to “Stairway to Heaven.”

DUTERTE LEADS IN NEW POLL FOR DAVAO CITY MAYOR

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has come out the leader in a new poll conducted by Pulse Asia, beating Senator Grace Poe, Vice President Jejomar Binay, former Interior Secretary Mar Roxas and Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago.

As Duterte supporters celebrated the new survey results, Pulse Asia issued a clarification that the poll was not about the people’s choice for president of the Philippines. Rather, it was a poll on who respondents think would be elected mayor of Davao City if elections were held this month.

Duterte is a declared candidate for Davao City mayor. He has yet to officially file his candidacy for president.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Many Filipinos are wondering how Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte can still run for Philippine president when the deadline for the filing of candidacy has passed.  The answer is in an unspoken law that allows declared candidates belonging to a political party to withdraw and designate a “substitute.”

Martin Diño, the presidential candidate of Partido Demokratikong Pilipino-Laban ng Bayan (PDP-Laban)  withdrew from the race on Oct. 29 to pave the way for Duterte to run in his stead.

There is one problem, though. The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is pursuing cases in which it would declare certain candidates as “nuisance candidates,” and subsequently disqualifying them from the electoral race.  Diño is one of those candidates.

So, run if he will, but Duterte will be declared by COMELEC as a nuisance candidate, because a nuisance candidate like Diño can only be replaced by another nuisance candidate.

It’s more fun in the Philippines. Especially in politics!
