PhilStar And The Adobo Chronicles: A Recap

  • On October 30, 2017, Philippine Star published a column by Al Pedroche in its Pilipino edition in which he narrated a supposed conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and an unnamed reporter from an unnamed news organization.  Among other things, Trump reportedly called Philippine Senator Antonio Trillanes a ‘narco.’ (At some point after the publication, PhilStar pulled the column from its online site, but the printed edition, of course, remained intact.)
  • On November 1, 2017, Philippine Star published another column, this time by Mary Ann LL Reyes, in which she also narrated the same unconfirmed conversation between Trump and the unnamed reporter.
  • On October 31, 2017 — or a day after the PhilStar column came out — The Adobo Chronicles published a satirical article based on the column of Mr. Pedroche.  In that satirical article, we referenced the unconfirmed report about Trump calling Trillanes a ‘narco.’ Then we added a fictional response by Trillanes, calling Trump a ‘Wacko.’
  • On November 1, PhilStar published a news report by Kristine Patag regarding Trillanes’ assertion that the alleged conversation between Trump and the unnamed reporter as narrated in the PhilStar opinion column  was ‘fake.’ The news reporter ‘researched’ the source of the ‘fake’ report online which, Patag said, led to Adobo Chronicles as the source.
  • On November 2, Adobo Chronicles publisher sent an email to the editor of PhilStar.  Here is the email and the subsequet response from PhilStar:

Our focus at The Adobo Chronicles is writing and publishing satirical news and memes.  We are not in the business of being the subject of news.

And so while we are not convinced about the alibi stated by PhilStar in its response to our email, we content ourselves with the correction of the story and the expression of regret over the erroneous reference to The Adobo Chronicles in the original November 1 news report by Ms. Patag.

There are other parties that may have been offended by PhilStar’s erroneous report and so we leave it up to them to take the necessary action that they see as appropriate.

Philippine Star Publishes Fake News

0AFEC83F-A47A-45E6-80A0-9A2C39888B47UPDATE: PhilStar has since “corrected” its story and has removed any mention of Adobo Chronicles as the alleged source of the unconfirmed information.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Pinoy Ako Blog’s Jover Laurio did it. And so did the ‘legitimate news site’ Philippine Star.  Both just published fake news.

But let’s leave Laurio alone.  She’s a blogger.  Let’s focus on PhilStar.

On October 30, PhilStar published an opinion column in its Pilipino edition claiming that U.S. President Donald Trump called Philippine Senator Antonio Trillanes a ‘narco.’ No specific source of the information was cited except that an unnamed reporter from an unnamed news source reportedly interviewed Trump aboard Air Force One, the presidential plane.

On October 31, Thinking Pinoy posted a comment on his Twitter account about the reported statement from Trump.  He referenced PhilStar as the source of info.

On the same day — October 31 — The Adobo Chronicles published a ‘story’ about Trump and Trillanes, adding that the senator in turn called the U.S. President a ‘wacko.’

Then on November 1, PhilStar published a news report about Trillanes calling the Trump statement ‘fake news.’

Guess who PhilStar blamed for the alleged ‘fake news?’ — The Adobo Chronicles!

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?  So, who is spreading fake news now?

Rappler Fact-Checks Pinoy Ako Blog

25666B32-6A0E-4AA6-93B6-B7AC434FEC53.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In its first major fact-checking project since becoming a member of the International Fact-Check Network, Rappler condemned Jover Laurio and her Pinoy Ako Blog (PAB) for spreading fake news.

Rappler did an in-depth investigation into the facts claimed by PAB in its post which claimed that Thinking Pinoy (TP) was spreading fake news about U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly calling Philippine Senator Antonio Trillanes a “narco.”

PAB cited The Adobo Chronicles as TP’s source, pointing out that the former is a satire site.

In its investigation, Rappler found out that TP’s source was actually the Philippine Star, not The Adobo Chronicles.  TP himself said so on his Twitter page.

“Furthermore,” Rappler said, “TP’s post preceded The Adobo Chronicles’ story so it couldn’t be possible that he got his information from the satire site.“

When asked what Rappler’s source was for its investigation, CEO Maria Ressa said, “The Adobo Chronicles.”
